On Saturday, the Princess of Wales made her first public appearance in six months at this year’s Trooping the Colour ceremony, after undergoing treatment for a cancer diagnosis first shared with the public through an emotional statement back in March. And right by her side to offer their support were her three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

While all three smiled and waved to the gathered crowds—many of whom had arrived to offer the princess their support after she made the surprise announcement yesterday that she would be attending the event—it was the nine-year-old Princess Charlotte who stole the show in a charming nautical-inspired outfit that took its cues from her mom’s Jenny Packham dress.

While the Princess of Wales’s white column gown featured a navy-and-white striped bow at the neckline, Charlotte’s sailor-style dress came in navy with white piping around the waist and sleeves, as well as along the paneled collar at the back. A white bow was placed in her hair, and she stepped into the Horse Guards Parade in central London wearing a pair of white Mary Janes.

It’s not the first time the Princess of Wales and her daughter have coordinated while making a public appearance. Arguably the most memorable matching moment came at the coronation of King Charles last year, when the pair wore silver bullion and crystal flower crowns by Jess Collet and Alexander McQueen, serving as a nod to the British folklore figure of the Green Man. (The design was widely interpreted as an homage to the king’s lifelong interest in nature, gardening, and championing environmental causes.)

On an important day for the Princess of Wales, as she makes her tentative first steps back into public life after a turbulent year, today’s outfits served as a heartwarming expression of their powerful mother-daughter bond.
