You could say that there is a sense of playfulness in any unboxing; the whole practice of slowly unwrapping a package and then revealing its contents is deeply fun—all the more so when you share it with friends (and strangers) on social media. But there’s no unboxing quite like an Off-White unboxing. Virgil Abloh's unique sense of amusement expressed through the lens of youth culture was a big part of the idea for Paperwork, his posthumous line of ageless, genderless pure pigment crayons, nail polishes, and fragrances that debuted in his last Off-White collection via drawn-on lip rings and hand-cut velour face decals floating above Kendall Jenner’s and Kaia Gerber’s cheek bones. Arriving in the form of a trio of limited-edition kits—each complete with a Masters of the Universe toy from Mattel Creations—the line’s second drop is just as whimsical.

Made from lightweight mono-material packaging that can be recycled in the paper bin (if anyone were to actually discard the collectible casing), each industrial gray capsule represents its own sensorial escape. The Olfactive ID Box includes travel-size vials of each of the four Solution fragrances Abloh created in collaboration with perfumers Alexis Dadier, Jerome Epinette, and Sidonie Lancesseur as a way of merging scent and experimentation. When blended, a hint of Solution 1’s aquatic nineties throwback vibes layered with, say, Solution 4’s leather, wood, and tobacco notes nod to city streets and the styles they inspire. A graphic fanzine, folded and bound with a rubber band in the label’s signature slime green, lines each box and activates a visual response while a figurine of He-Man, Skeletor, or Evil-Lyn provides an element of surprise. Meanwhile, the Imprint Box captures Abloh’s interest in graffiti techniques with multi-use pigment crayons in shades of Signal (a bright poppy), Jet (an inky black), Zone (a neon yellow), and Drill (a deep burgundy) that can just as easily recreate the 2-D lip ring Serena Williams wore on Off-White’s Fall runway or a winged eye. A small bottle of Primary, a canvas-prepping face primer, rounds out the tools of creative expression.

The standout, though, might be the Color Matter Box of textural nail polishes, which includes a sheet of liquid-like logos, hands, smiley faces, butterflies, and peace sign decals in a spectrum of synth-wave colors (think: fluro green, violet, teal, and peach) that can be sealed with a clear top coat and multidimensional  glitter, or pressed onto velvety matte lacquers in shades of soft dove gray or electric pink. That a Mattel Creations toy comes in whichever box you choose is a final treat, not unlike the one you might have dug out of a cereal box in grade school. Collectively, the contents manage to both magnify the present and dream up a future adventure—a fitting addition to Abloh’s legacy of recognizing the urgency in every moment.
