While some 30th birthday parties are quiet, intimate affairs meant to usher in a more serious stage of adulthood, Frank Ocean went an entirely different route for his big day this weekend. The singer-songwriter welcomed the end of his twenties in glamorous and dramatic fashion, throwing a Paris Is Burning–theme ball replete with RuPaul’s Drag Race favorites. Famous friends like Tyler, the Creator and Joanne the Scammer led the requisite “Happy Birthday” song while Frank blew out the candles on an Eiffel Tower–shaped cake.

And if the sight of Frank Ocean facing off with drag queen Gia Gunn on the runway isn’t enough of a spectacle, Ocean did it all in an asymmetrical, one-sleeved red shirt and shimmering sheer tights reminiscent of Rihanna’s rhinestone-encrusted Gucci bodysuit. Ocean’s tribute to the 1990 documentary on New York City’s ball culture comes as no surprise—he sampled an audio clip of Crystal LaBeija from the film on a song from last year’s Endless—but his bold birthday look is certainly a wonderfully unexpected birthday present to us all.
