Key Takeaways

  • Popular ice cream products, including Hershey’s, Chipwich, and Jeni’s, were recalled due to potential Listeria contamination.
  • No illnesses have been reported, but the FDA advises customers to return recalled products.
  • Listeria poses a significant health risk for pregnant people, newborns, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals.

More than 60 ice cream products—including Hershey’s, Chipwich, and Jeni’s—have been recalled due to possible Listeria contamination.

Maryland-based Totally Cool, Inc., recalled ice cream products from more than a dozen brands after FDA sampling discovered the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, bacteria that can cause potentially fatal infections.

No illness has been reported so far, the FDA said.

Totally Cool has halted production and distribution of the products. The FDA urged customers to return any recalled product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Listeria infection (listeriosis) is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The bacteria can cause a mild intestinal illness with symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting, which usually start within 24 hours after eating contaminated food and last one to three days. An invasive case of Listeria infection—meaning it has spread beyond the gut—may involve symptoms like fever, headache, and fatigue.

Pregnant people, newborns, adults aged 65 and older, and immunocompromised individuals are most at risk of falling seriously ill from a Listeria infection.

Listeria can be hard to remove from food processing facilities, according to the CDC. The germs can spread from contaminated surfaces or equipment to food, and they can even survive refrigeration.

Earlier this year, the FDA investigated a deadly Listeria outbreak linked to queso fresco and cotija cheese and found the bacteria in the manufacturer’s storage container.
