Royal watchers worldwide were happy to see Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, attend Trooping the Colour in her first royal public engagement since Christmas Day 2023 over the weekend. Included in that crowd of well-wishers? Gwyneth Paltrow.

"So happy to see you looking so happy and well❤,” Paltrow commented on an Instagram carousel of photos posted to the official account that Kate shares with her husband, Prince William, on Sunday.

Kate’s appearance at Trooping the Colour, the sovereign’s annual birthday celebration, on Saturday featured the princess and her family riding in a royal carriage, watching the parade from a window at Buckingham Palace, and then as part of a tightly edited selection of senior royals on the palace’s balcony to close out the festivities. She announced via Instagram on Friday that she would attend—a decision that sources tell Vanity Fair was entirely her own. In her caption, Kate wrote that she was not yet “out of the woods,” but that she hopes to “join a few public engagements over the summer.”

Kate did not attend ceremonies for the Order of the Garter Monday, another important annual royal event.

Paltrow’s comment is notable partly because she is known to be friendly with Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, who are reportedly still estranged from the Wales family after the pair resigned their roles as senior royals in 2020 and moved to America. Paltrow and her husband, Brad Falchuk, have dined with the couple before, and all were guests at the surprise vow renewal of Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi (officiated by Kris Jenner) in 2023.
