While driving down an empty road, listening to her favorite songs to decompress and unwind, Janna Johnson had an epiphany. She looked in her rearview mirror and realized, “You can’t get to your destination if you’re not looking in front of you.” But she wasn’t referring to a physical place.

Past experiences people go through play a big role in who they are today—if those past experiences are allowed to control people, they risk missing out on the growth and opportunities that lie ahead.

As a holistic nutritionist, integrative health coach, and mindset expert, Johnson helps individuals feel their very best from the inside out and regain focus on what’s in front of them rather than on what’s holding them back.

“Most people live their lives being held back by their limiting beliefs,” she says, adding that, “those limiting beliefs are often formed during childhood and years growing up, creating ‘invisible chains,’ that stops people from being able to move through life with ease.”

“My limiting beliefs had to do with never feeling good enough, never feeling approved of or loved,” says Johnson. “I associated weight with looking good and had my first eating disorder when I was eleven years old. It was rough.  No kid should feel that way.”

As a result of her limiting beliefs, Johnson experienced many consequences including “horrible relationships, multiple eating disorders, and making wrong choices because I was constantly trying to fill these voids with quicksand, which is impossible.”

In 2012, Johnson was diagnosed with Lyme disease, and it was one of the hardest things she’s ever gone through. There were many moments where she prayed to God to not wake up the next day to relieve her of her pain, but in her darkest moment, she ultimately found the power within herself to take control of her own well-being.

Instead of continuing to look through the rearview mirror, she made the choice to look ahead and heal herself.

“There's a reason that the rearview mirror is so narrow and small,” Johnson says. “It’s meant to be looked at from time to time, to remind you where you've been, what you've overcome, and what you will never go back to or allow again in your life.”

“The rearview mirror allows you to simply acknowledge your past from time to time as you head to your new destination,” she says. But Johnson explains that the issue is that “people stare in it, and they get stuck. They’re constantly trying to overcome something in the past.”

While reflection is important, Johnson reminds people that dwelling on the past can hinder progress causing one to get stuck in the victim mindset. Instead, she encourages people to set sights on where to go and who to be rather than where they’ve already been.

Whether it’s a mental or physical health condition or a traumatic experience, the key to moving forward lies in breaking free from the invisible chains caused by limiting beliefs, which breaks the cycle of dwelling on past struggles, allowing healing to take place. Only then can you embrace the journey of self-discovery and step into your power and purpose.

In her successful book entitled Unf*ck Your Mind: Shatter Your Limiting Beliefs to Become Who You Were Meant to Be, Johnson shares invaluable advice: Create your own happiness and love yourself first and foremost, because no one can take that away from you and you will no longer look in toxic places for either of those.

“When I was attaching my happiness to certain things or a person in my life, that happiness was always fleeting,” she says. “It was always temporary. Now I create my own happiness. Not one person can take that away from me. No one can take my love away from me. No one can take my happiness, my confidence, my acceptance, none of that,” she says.

“It’s all about freedom. Freedom to be who you are, to do what you want to do, to love who you want to love, to live the life you want to live,” she says.

But how do you get there?

Her gripping revival book Unf*ck Your Mind dives deep into the story of a victim turned victor whose limiting beliefs no longer hold her back.

Johnson’s book is for the person who knows their worth but is “too scared to go after it. The person who is sick and tired of not being their true, authentic self. The person who is tired of living their life to appease their parents or to gain someone’s approval or acceptance, the person who is looking for their happiness in something or someone other than themselves.” she says.

It is a testament to the incredible resilience of the human spirit. But more than that, it is a compass that can help you find direction so you no longer feel stuck in the past. Johnson teaches others that, “when you heal your gut, you heal your body, and when you heal your mind, you free your life.” That is the key to freedom, she says.
