I’m a personal finance and travel writer, so I’m a big fan of using rewards credit cards. I use them for everyday purchases to earn rewards and access valuable card benefits. But know that I always pay my entire statement balance in full to avoid credit card interest fees. It’s never a good idea to spend more than you can afford.

This credit card has many valuable features, including earning 3 points per $1 on the first $150,000 spent on travel and select business categories each account anniversary year and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases for an annual fee of $95.
It also comes with a big welcome bonus of 120,000 points after spending $8,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
But the ongoing feature that stands out is the included cellphone protection. I’m very clumsy, so I drop my phone more than I care to admit. Knowing that I have this coverage helps set my mind at ease.
I’m also a Google Fi customer so I qualify for cellphone protection benefits since I pay my Google Fi bill with my Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card. Here’s what you need to know about the Ink Business Preferred’s cellphone coverage perk.
Cellphone protection coverage of up to $1,000
The Ink Business Preferred card offers up to $1,000 per claim in cellphone protection against covered theft or damage to their cellphones. Cardholders can make up to three claims in a 12-month period, and a deductible of $100 applies to each claim. This can carry significant value if you tend to have damage to your phone.
There’s one catch: You must pay your cellphone service bill with your Ink Business Preferred card to be eligible for this benefit. I pay my Google Fi bill with my Ink Business Preferred Card, so I can access this coverage if I need it.
Your savings may vary with this benefit
Many mobile service providers extend a monthly discount to customers who enroll in autopay billing. However, some mobile carriers only offer an autopay discount to customers who pay their phone bill with a debit card or bank account.
For those who have this kind of discount offer from their carrier, if they want the discount on their bill, they can’t pay with a credit card. In turn, this means no access to any cellphone protection benefits that come with paying with your card.
You’ll want to compare the loss of this discount to the cost of purchasing cellphone insurance on your own. Most carriers charge roughly $10 per month for cellphone insurance. If your discount is more than the cost of insurance, then it may be better to get the discount on your bill and purchase insurance separately.
This card perk pairs nicely with Google Fi
Google Fi allows all customers to pay their bills with a credit card or debit card. No autopay billing discounts are available, but Google Fi has affordable service rates. So, I don’t feel I’m missing out on a $5 or $10 monthly autopay discount. And I can use the cellphone protection benefits since I pay my Google Fi bill with my Ink Business Preferred card.
When I needed to make a claim. I saved $300 on repair costs after paying a $100 deductible. Every time I drop my phone, I take a deep breath and remind myself that I have this valuable coverage.
Put your credit card perks to use
Remember, if you have the Ink Business Preferred card, you must pay your cellphone service bill with your credit card to be eligible for cellphone protection coverage. But if you drop your phone and it’s severely damaged, you’ll be glad to have access to this valuable perk.
There may be other perks you’re forgetting to use, too.
Your card may have extras you weren’t even aware of. Here’s all the benefits of the Ink Business Preferred card
For example, the Ink Business Preferred also comes with extended warranty protection, which adds an additional year to the manufacturer’s warranty if it’s three years or less. This could come in handy if an item you bought with your card breaks, but it’s also not a perk you may think of right away, so it’s good to make note of it.
