USA Baseball Alumni Report

Keep track of some of the best performances among Team USA alumni across every level of the sport

From high school to the pros, USA Baseball alumni are all over the baseball landscape in 2024. Follow along throughout the season to keep track of some of the best performances among Team USA alumni across every level of the sport.

Carlos Rodon

Back-to-back Collegiate National Team alumni and New York Yankees ace Carlos Rodon fired seven strong innings for the Bronx Bombers in their AL East clash with the Tampa Bay Rays. Rodon hurled a whopping 10 punchouts, a season-high for the 2012 and 2013 Collegiate National Team veteran. Rodon only allowed two hits, one run, and two walks on the way to his tenth win of the season. While he gave up a solo shot home run, the Yankees claimed a dominant 9-1 victory to open their series against the Rays.

Hunter Greene

Another former USA Baseball pitcher led his team to a victory on Monday. 2014 15U National Team alumni Hunter Greene threw seven frames of no-run baseball against the Atlanta Braves for Cincinnati. Greene punched out seven Braves in his start in Atlanta and only allowed two hits and three walks to nab his seventh win of his 2024 campaign. The Reds helped their ace out on offense and eventually emerged with a 4-1 win over the Braves.

Will Benson

Hunter Greene wasn’t the only USA Baseball alumni to help Cincinnati’s claim victory in Atlanta on Monday. Left fielder Will Benson played a critical role in the win by most notably smashing a third-inning solo home run to extend his team’s lead to 2-0. By the end of the day the 2015 18U National Team alumni went 2-for-2 with a walk and using his wheels to steal not one, but two bases in his squad’s 4-1 win.

Bobby Witt Jr.

After their 10-4 win over Arizona, Bobby Witt Jr. and his Kansas City Royals are 4-0 since the All-Star break, and it doesn’t look like he, or his team, is stopping anytime soon. In fact, Witt nearly hit for the cycle in Monday’s match against the Diamondbacks, and he nearly did it in just six innings. After tripling in the first, doubling in the third, and smashing a home run in the fourth, the 2018 18U National Team and 2023 World Baseball Classic alumni was just a single short of the heroic accomplishment. However, after getting hit by a pitch and out on a fly ball in his next two at-bats, the Kansas City slugger just missed out on the cycle in his team’s big win over Arizona.

July 21

2010 Collegiate National Team alum George Springer went yard twice in a game for the second time this season to power the Blue Jays to a 5-4 win over the Tigers in Toronto, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Springer put the opening run on the board in his first at-bat, smashing a 404-foot solo shot into center during the bottom of the first inning. His power surge carried over to his second appearance at the plate, as Springer smacked a 392-foot, two-run blast once again into center for a 3-0 Toronto lead. Finding his side down 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Springer was again up to the task as he slashed a double into left and scored the tying run thanks to an RBI single in the next at-bat.

2015 15U National Team alum Justyn-Henry Malloy was the player who had given Detroit its 4-3 lead before Springer tied the game, demolishing a grand-slam in the top of the fifth inning. Down 3-0, Malloy crushed his sixth homer of the season 404 feet into center to hand the Tigers a brief 4-3 advantage.

2021 Collegiate National Team alum Drew Thorpe tossed six scoreless innings for the White Sox in a 4-1 loss to the Royals on Sunday, exiting with Chicago leading 1-0. While the White Sox were unable to hold onto the lead following Thorpe’s exit, he was a bright spot in the loss with five strikeouts to three hits allowed. Thorpe is currently 3-1 this season in seven starts, having held opposing batters to three or fewer hits and two or fewer earned runs in six of those games.

July 20

2023 World Baseball Classic alum Brady Singer improved to 6-6 on the season, going seven innings on the mound to collect the win as the Royals topped the White Sox in Kansas City, 6-1. Singer recorded seven strikeouts during his shift, the second time in his last three outings that he’s fanned seven hitters in a seven-inning start. Against Chicago, Singer limited the White Sox to just seven runners on the basepaths and kept them scoreless before his relief, allowing his offense to go to work.

Brent Rooker smacked his 22nd home run of the season to help push Oakland over the Angels in a dominant 8-2 win on Saturday at the Oakland Coliseum. Rooker’s first at-bat consisted of the three-run shot that traveled 445 feet to left field, putting his squad up 3-0 early. Burleson notched his first hit and RBI of the evening on a sac fly in the top of the first inning, then raked an RBI single through right in the following inning as St. Louis built a 4-1 lead early. Burleson’s final hit came at a big time in the top of the ninth inning, with Atlanta having cut the lead to just one run going into the final six outs. Driving another single into right, Burleson added another run to the Cardinals’ lead to help his squad pull away for the win.

July 19

2023 World Baseball Classic alum Jeff McNeil went deep twice in a game for the first time this season, but was unable to prevent the Mets from dropping a 6-4 contest to the Marlins in Miami. Finishing 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored, McNeil cranked a solo home run 401 feet into center for his first hit of the day in the top of the fifth inning, trying to lead the Mets back from a 4-0 deficit. With the Marlins up 2-0 in the bottom of the third frame, Burger slashed an RBI double and rounded the bases in the next at-bat to extend the lead to four runs. The 2016 Collegiate National Team alum tacked on another run with a solo shot over the center field wall which is good for his eleventh on the season. In his last four games, Burger has been on a hot streak at the plate by registering eight hits and six RBIs in that span. The former first rounder has also scored five runs in his last three games.

Kansas City teammates Michael Wacha and Bobby Witt Jr. helped lead the Royals to a 7-1 win over the White Sox on Friday, with Wacha showing out on the mound and Witt Jr. posting a perfect line at the plate. Wacha, a 2011 Collegiate National Team alum, picked up his seventh win of the season after going seven scoreless innings, striking out seven Chicago batters and letting just five reach the basepaths. Meanwhile, Witt Jr. finished 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs, scoring twice as well in the win. The two-time USA Baseball alum put the opening run on the board with a 399-foot solo blast in the bottom of the first inning, then added a pair of singles as the game went on.

The former first rounder got his bat started in the sixth frame where he delivered a booming three-run shot to center field to garner the Braves a four-run advantage. In the eighth frame, d’Arnaud tacked on another run courtesy of a solo homer to put the finishing touches on the game and let Atlanta walk away with a 6-3 win. In his last four games, d’Arnaud has registered seven RBIs while recording multiple-hit games in two of the contests in that span.

Four-time USA Baseball alum Pete Crow-Armstrong had one of his best days of the season at the dish as he crushed two homers to lift the Cubs over the Cardinals 8-3. With his team down 2-0 in the top of the third inning, Crow-Armstrong started off hot and delivered a solo home run to cut the Cardinals lead to just one run. Crow-Armstrong continued his strong story with a second home run which would register the Cubs a 4-2 lead. The former first round pick found his way to first base on a walk in the seventh inning and demonstrated his elusiveness on the base path by collecting his 17th stolen base of the season. Crow-Armstrong’s performance was historic as he became the first player in Cubs history to slap two home runs in the No. 9 spot since 2019.

In his next at-bat, Carroll demonstrated his power with a three-run shot over the left field wall to notch Arizona a seven-run lead going into the eighth frame. Miami’s Jake Burger had himself a stellar night at the dish, notching a game-best four hits and four RBIs in the Marlins 10-6 loss to Cincinnati on Saturday. The Reds regained a one-run lead in the next inning, but Burger had an answer as he delivered a two-RBI single to take a 5-4 lead. In his next at-bat, the former first rounder found his way to the base path with a single to right field and would later make his way across the plate to move the score to 7-6 in favor of the Reds. Castellanos was the first to do so, crushing a 423-foot shot over the center field wall to give Philadelphia its first two runs of the day in the second inning. It was Turner’s time in the fourth inning, as the three-time alum decked his own two-run blast to left center for a 6-2 Phillies’ lead.
