Campaign ‘UPV switches to Ecosia’

Starting Monday, June 5th, World Environment Day, the computers of the UPV’s administration and services staff will use by default Ecosia, the internet search engine that fights the climate crisis by planting trees. Ecosia is a not-for-profit company; all its profits go to reforestation, thus offsetting polluting emissions. On the Ecosia website, the monthly financial reports, the final amount allocated to their environmental purpose, and the projects they are involved in are available for consultation.

Each internet search through Ecosia generates an average profit of 0.005 €; this allows the company to plant a tree every 50 searches. In 15 years, each tree will have absorbed an average of 50 kg CO2 of the atmosphere, i.e., 1 kg per search.

In addition, Ecosia has its own photovoltaic power plant, which generates twice as much renewable energy as it uses. Therefore, Ecosia has a double positive effect on the environment thanks to its trees and its renewable energy.

The UPV is the first public university in Spain to adopt this change, following the example of almost 30 universities worldwide, as well as other European and American institutions.

More information about the campaign launch.

Report on the first month of using Ecosia

From the campaign’s launch until June 27, the UPV computers have carried out 54,172 searches with Ecosia, a figure that has led to the planting of 1,083 trees.
