Be aware about booking hotels in Big Sur area on weekends

Hello! I'd like to help others not make the same mistake I made when thinking about your itinerary and hotels in Big Sur.

When choosing the days for our road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara, I didn't think ahead to what day we would be driving through Big Sur. We are doing our trip around the end of October, partly to travel off-season and avoid some of the crowded conditions. But our Big Sur days landed on the weekend, which isn't ideal. So you might want to think about this ahead of time when planning.

Also, this is important because I found out that the hotels (there aren't that many) in Big Sur have a 2 night minimum booking on weekends. We decided to split up our days in this area by staying one night in order to have more time for stops and hiking, but we only needed one night. I booked a room at the Big Sur Lodge, and it is not super obvious on their website that there is a 2 night minimum; only after I booked it did I see that. Other hotels state the 2 night minimum pretty clearly.

I cancelled Big Sur Lodge, and started searching for a place to stay for 1 night. I called Deetjen's Inn, and the person there was nice enough to allow me to book a room for one night, although it's more than I'd like to spend. Oh well - live and learn!

The 2 night minimum rule for weekends is common all along the California coast, save for some of the bare bones budget offerings.

Glad Deetjens accommodated your needs. You lucked out on that.

Pretty much every hotel/motel/inn requires two nights on the weekends. They will fit you in if there is gap in bookings but you usually have to call.

I’d rather stay at Deetjen’s over the Big Sur Lodge. It’s a special and unique place. Enjoy the restaurant if you can.

This is good for people to know about booking on the weekends! And yes - shout out to Deetjen's for being willing to help us out. We'll look forward to staying there and eating at the restaurant!

Enjoy! Their dining room is so cozy. Both dinner and breakfast are great. They are known for their eggs Benedict. The gardens are gorgeous. It’s rustic but it all works. It’s rustic elegance I guess.

We have a 5 night trip coming up at another property and I have breakfast at Deetjen’s penciled in.

There is nothing wrong with the Big Sur Lodge but since you’re traveling a long way I’m sure you’ll be happy to stay at a unique place like Deetjen’s once you’re here.

Carmel is one of our stops, but we are staying in 5 different places during our trip down the coast, which I'm sure mirrors many people's plans as well. This was news to me and I think it could be helpful for others who may have not been to the area before, especially if they're panning this type of road trip.

This is something that is frequently mentioned on all the central coast forums from Monterey to Santa Barbara. But apparently is bears repeating.

Carmel requires a two night minimum at most lodgings as well. Plus staying in Big Sur doesn’t compare to day trips from Carmel. Just seeing the stars at night with zero light pollution is a highlight. The quiet once cars stop zooming by on Highway 1. The smell of the redwoods in the morning. I could go on.

There’s a reason why Big Sur lodging is in such high demand and the prices reflect that. The op made an excellent choice and is lucky they found somewhere to accommodate them.

We try to remind people of two night minimum when people are asking for tips on their route. Lake Tahoe is another place that frequently requires two nights over a weekend. Some places drop that requirement in the winter.

Thanks for the warning OP; I'm in the process of planning my own trip now and wasn't aware that this was the norm.
