About
This medieval Tuscan castle and winery stands out in Napa Valley as one of its most unusual buildings. At this gorgeous location on the hillside above Calistoga, you can explore the castle's Grand Barrel Room, chapel, and Great Hall, and more curious rooms like the Torture Chamber and dungeon. Pick from a variety of tasting tours to sample some of their award-winning wines, paired with charcuterie, cheeses, and chocolate. The best time to visit is from August through October to catch Napa’s harvest season—it gets busy so make your reservations early to secure your slot. – Tripadvisor

- DJLJShelby Township, Michigan43 contributionsBeautiful and NoisyLoved the look of this place, medieval and beautiful, but it was pretty noisy! They are probably very popular, hence all of the noise and people, but for tastings and educational tours, I prefer a little more of a quiet atmosphere. I missed a lot of what our guide had to say. Wines were very good, especially the Chardonnay Reserve.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 2, 2023
- Lilly M6 contributionsWelcome to the Experience of a Lifetime!Castello di Amorosa was an experience all on its own. The self-guided tour was astonishing, and it felt as if we were in another country. The views and setup of the entire facility were to perfection. Prior to our tour of the grounds, where each section of grapes was labeled by the type of wine it would produce, we had a wonderful host, Frederico. He had only been there for 15 days but knew everything about each wine he served us. I love learning about the method in which different varieties of wine are made, and he certainly knew his way around. That being said, I would strongly recommend requesting Frederico for a wonderful experience. The wines were fantastic, and as a red wine drinker, I loved trying the unique reds, along with mixing them up and starting with a couple of types of rosé-style wines. My husband loved the dessert wines. However, I took note of a few of my favorites. We started off with a smooth, double gold rosé that was delicious, despite being considered a dry wine. If you love a good rosé, the "Gewürztraminer" was simply amazing. It was nothing like any wine I have tried before, and the floral notes really made it unique. As Frederico said, once you try it, you will recognize it easily the next time you have it. I believe this to be 100% true as it was an unforgettable tasting. The "Wine Enthusiast Merlot" was delectable with a nice touch of spice and a smooth finish. We also tried two cabernets, the "James Suckling Cabernet Sauvignon," my personal favorite of the two, which was very full-bodied and smooth. My second favorite cabernet, and one that Frederico mentioned is often tastier as it ages was the "Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon." This was a delicious cabernet. However, as he mentioned, it would be much tastier with a little age. Overall, I feel as though you are paying in large part for the experience, but it is an experience of a lifetime, and the wines are very good, so it is well worth it. I strongly encourage Castello di Amorosa for both the wine and the experience and time we spent there. It was well worth it. Reservations are a must! Thank you again, Frederico! - TerrasTravelsLas Vegas, Nevada2,690 contributionsCastle NapaThis is a must when visiting Napa! Make reservations far in advance! If you don’t have a reservation, they will not even let you on the grounds. The venue is spectacular in and of itself! You can roam the castle! And there’s goats and animals too! Once inside when you have your tasting, they are really accommodating, knowledgeable, and the customer service is impeccable! My family, friends, and I had such a good time here! Definitely get the cheese and the chocolate! Food and wine divine! Their wine stoppers are pretty cool if you notice them! They also sell them in the shop as well as many other things and it’s fun to look around down there! We definitely got more than our moneys worth, and will definitely be back when in Napa again!Visited July 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 2, 2023
- Steven LOdessa, Delaware468 contributionsWonderful experienceWe needed a reservation (no walk-ups), and when we arrived, we were brought right to our table in the outdoor tasting area. Eva R was our wine expert, and she did an excellent job making us feel welcome, attending to the table, and explaining all the different wines that we enjoyed. It was a very relaxed wine-tasting event, and we liked all the different varieties that we sampled. Eva did a great job explaining them to us so that we understood what we were drinking before we sampled it. Our teenage son came with us, and he was able to sample the fancy grape juice too. Fun afternoon!Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 2, 2023

My husband and I went to the castle ready for an amazing experience. We purchased tickets from the official castle website for the Diamond Tour & Reserve wine tasting. We added some chocolate to the order because wine and chocolate were going to make the perfect end to a great experience.
The tour & tasting supposed to be about one hour and 50 minutes in length per web site details.
We flew in from Phoenix and rented a car from SFO to get to this experience.
We got more excited as we arrived because the view and the drive up to the castle are amazing.
But that is kind of where amazing ended.
The tour started a bit late, considering that there were only 5 people and the guide in this group.
Our guide did not care a bit about history, wine making or storytelling. He tried to sell us wine from the moment we met. The castle tour was super rushed, he kept pointing at stuff we can tour on our own, outside, later. And he talked about how many bottles he sells.
Also be aware that the wine tasting is at the bar, standing. You feel like an intruder in the space of the people who are not touring, who are sited at the tables.
The tasting is rushed, filled with more information on signing up for the wine club, and possible discounts.
Within 55 minutes the whole tour and tasting experience were DONE, including gift shop time.
We wound NOT recommend this experience to anyone.
Look at the pictures online and know that you are better off than wasting time and money making the trip to the castle!

If you have kids this is the place to go. If you want a great tasting experience then avoid at all costs. It’s a cattle call tasting experience with marginal wine.

Used to go here with my family a lot to do tastings, buy wine, and check out the castle. Then they started raising the prices of the tours so just came here to buy wine and check out the castle. Now, they’ve blocked access to the castle unless you buy their wines or book a tour ahead of time. Guess I won’t be coming here anymore.

Amazing high end wines, meh mid tier wines. The distinct difference between the premium packages and the normal/lite packages stand out. Case in point, if you're in the Wine Club, you have cheaper access to the tours and sit and sip downstairs in the A/C basement. Normal package has you in the non-A/C dining hall; which in the summer gets uncomfortable fast.
It's a neat castle with a good story, but I probably wouldn't want to return despite the good wine.

My visit to the castle designed and built for tourists in Napa Valley, a picturesque vineyard in California, was truly remarkable. Upon the recommendation of friends, I had the pleasure of indulging in wine tasting sessions, listening to magical stories, and admiring the stunning views. It was an unforgettable experience basking in the beauty and serene atmosphere of the place. Booking in advance is a must to avoid the crowds. I highly recommend this excursion.

Excellent in all ways but beware tasting schedule. We made reservations well in advance because we were traveling with 5 including a young child. This was one of the few vineyards to accommodate kids. We arrived more than half hour before our tasting time. Checked in and everything went smoothly. Explored the castle then were ready to be seated. A local friend had added herself to our reservation then didn't allow travel time to be present by the tasting time. The reservation is intended that all be seated at the time (not straggling in). Fortunately we were allowed to go ahead without her and she never arrived. This is NOT a casual venue. Anyone who feels rushed may have not arrived the 15 min early as recommended on their reservation. We were there 2 hours with many options and generous pours. There were other children dressed appropriately as princesses making it fun. The non alcoholic grape juice was enjoyed. I am not a novice and found their knowledgeable information and the vineyard charming. We placed a sizable order for wine to be shipped and it arrived home before we did. These people are very businesslike. Meet their commitments and top rate all the way around

We did the diamond estate tour, which I highly recommend. Stephane Baty was our guide, and if you can request a guide, I would definitely ask for him. He was charming, well informed, and had such a love of wine that it was contagious. I am new to tours like this and learned so much, both about wine, the vineyard, and the building. He also gave his honest opinions and had great advice, helping us to choose the right wines that worked for us. When I tasted a wine, he was able to decipher my leanings and steer me toward new wines I would also like. Get the chocolate package with the tour!

BE AWARE if you are from a different culture or not so familiar with the wine tasting process.
I recently visited this winery for a Father’s Day celebration with my family. Our overall experience did not meet our expectations. Furthermore, we felt embarrassed by the actions of one of the staff members. He ruined our Father’s Day celebration.
As someone from a different culture and visiting for the first time, I was unfamiliar with the wine tasting protocols. Unfortunately, our server did not explain any rules or procedures, seemingly assuming we were already aware of them. Towards the end of our tasting, she left a nearly empty bottle on our table and did not return.
Unaware of the rules due to the lack of explanation, I attempted to pour the remaining wine into a glass. At that moment, a different server approached our table aggressively, admonishing us and accusing us of actions that could "put them out of business." This confrontation, without any prior clarification of the rules, was both unacceptable and culturally insensitive.
While our assigned server was nice, this incident with the other staff member significantly marred our experience and ruined our Father’s Day celebration. We were left feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable in front of other guests due to the lack of proper communication and the aggressive response from the other server.
I hope the winery takes this feedback seriously to improve the experience for future guests.

Epic. Breath taking. No wonder its the most visited winery in the Valley. The detail in building the Castle and its decor is amazing. The downstairs private tasting room is so nice I would live there. I went early. 10:06 am tasting. I know thats early but im on East Coast time so not a big deal but it avoided the crowds that showed up by the time we left. Had the downstairs tasting room with the excellent Luca, all to ourselves for the most part. Wine was stellar also and only sold at the winery. You cant buy it at any store or restaurant.

We made a reservation online that had a very specific entry time, we were well taken care of and seated immediately inside the main great room. Our server Lyn K was fantastic. He was so incredibly knowledgeable about all the wines, picked out wines that each of us would specifically enjoy, we really enjoyed sitting inside as it was a warm day. The castle was quite crowded but there was plenty of room for everybody to walk about and enjoy the property. If you were looking for amazing Italian wines outside of Italy, I highly recommend stopping by the castle for a winetasting. We brought home multiple bottles of Barb wine, everything was fantastic. Would come back and bring friends.

California Experts,
I have booked a tour @ 9.30 AM, what time should i leave specifically considering traffiic from SFO Downtown, Planning. on Nov 20th Saturday
Written October 23, 2021
I would expect a minimum of a 2 hour drive from SFO downtown to the Castle. Probably best to expect 2.5 hours. The Castle does ask for you to arrive 15 minutes in advance of your tour, but from what I have seen that is not really necessary.. If you have a 9:30 AM tour, you are probably going to want to leave downtown SF at 7 at the latest

Staying in San Francisco and taking a day trip. How long will it take us to get here on a Monday mid morning? Want to make reservations but don't know what time to choose.
Written August 17, 2019
Hi! From the city, it will probably take at least 2 hours to drive up there, I'd give it 2.5 hours just to safe :)

My boyfriend doesn’t drink but we want to do the tour and I want to do the tasting as well. Would it be the same price for him?
Written August 5, 2019
Yes. I don’t drink but the others with us do. The price was worth the tour. It’s an interesting building. Their wines are also excellent and cannot be purchased at stores off the property.

Can you just go to Castello's store if you don't want to do any tasting or tour?
Written July 5, 2019
I think you can. However, if you do the tour and buy a set of bottles, it would make you eligible for a discount. I'm not exactly sure of the number that you have to buy to be eligible. I bought one Merlot and did not receive a discount.
