- JohnRegoParkRego Park, New YorkYou're going to end up here anyway, so you might as well enjoyCentrally located in downtown Munich, this square is a wonderful pedestrian-only spot to take in the cultural landscape of this city. The town hall is brilliantly designed, although not as old as you would think by looking at the ornament. The buildings that dot the square offer lots of tourist friendly amenities, but you would do better price-wise to step away from the center of town to patronize cafes or souvenir stands that are a bit more remote but easier on your wallet.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 21, 2023

- Must to goWe were in Munich two days. We stayed a hotel nearby the main train station. So it is walking distance to the old town. And this place is in side the old town, and it is a must to go. The architecture is amazing. All the details on the façade. We even google the story behind the creations, and it is fascinating to read the stories and seeing the old architecture at the same time. We highly recommend this.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 7, 2023
- The heart of MunichBe sure to go at 5:00 to see the clock tower come alive. Amazing to see. This is a beautiful square surrounded by great shops and restaurants. There is a subway station right in the square so an easy place to get to.Visited July 2023Written August 15, 2023
- jbg74Saint Paul, MinnesotaBeautiful and Historic SquareThis is a beautiful and historic square in the heart of the old city of Munich. A lot of things were destroying in WWII, but there are still some beautiful buildings and churches here. The Neu Rathaus and glockenspiel are great and you can eat at the Ratskeller for a kitschy, delicious Bavarian meal.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 16, 2023
- truck2chiefFloral Park, New YorkMust visit locationThe Marienplatz is the huge town square with many large restaurants adjacent to the square. Our first morning after arrival and room not quite ready we took a walk here which is about 15 min from the downtown Hilton. There is nothing like a wurst and Hacker-Schoor for breakfast, lol. So the Hacker Schoor is located in the middle of the square, a great place for people watching and enjoying fine German beer. We also visited the Hofbrau house and the Ratskellar over our 5 days, and there wasn't one meal we didn't enjoy. The architecture is amazing within the square well worth the visit even if not partaking in Oktoberfest, which is why we were in the city.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 21, 2023
- WrldadventToronto, CanadaVisit throughout the dayLove the square. In the morning there are lovely cafes to watch the crowds roll in and out. A few times a day you can view the kukoo clock display from the New City Hall, which looks old and in the afternoon and evening there are often musicians playing with many listeningVisited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 29, 2023
- Christopher ChooBeau Bassin - Rose HillVibrant Marienplatz to enhance your Munich experienceIt was my first trip to Munich and Marienplatz was a landmark that everyone recommended to me as it was not only located on the S-bahn intersection where I needed to change line to change for the U-bahn but I was agreeably surprised by the place's magical atmosphere at day or at night. It was always busy and full of possibilities. I went around when I had little to do and I found myself spending hours there just sitting and listening to people busking.Visited October 2023Traveled on businessWritten October 9, 2023
- sp4301Medford, OregonThe middle of it allMarienplatz is a beautiful and busy town square in the heart of Munich. It is easy to get to on the metro or by bike. Come see the glockenspiel (it’ll be crowded then) and don’t forget to got up in the tower or toy museum for a panoramic view.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 22, 2023
- Andrew OModesto, CaliforniaMunich tripFabulous city. Oktoberfest was fun. Stay in a downtown hotel, saves time. Take the hop on- hop off city tour. Munich is a fun city to walk around, and Marienplatz is really busy with a great vibe, particularly when the Glockenspiel show is going on. I hate to say it, but the Glockenspiel show was underwhelming. Sure, it's cute, but it's REALLY basic, and I wouldn't bend over backwards to be in Marienplatz at 11am/12pm/5pm just to see the show. But if you're close by, it's fun to see. Regardless, sitting in Marienplatz to have a coffee or snack is really enjoyable even if the Glockenspiel isn't going on.

In the heart of old town, no visit to Munich is complete without spending some time in Marienplatz. It’s a bustling plaza set against the backdrop of the Glockenspiel. Several subway lines run underneath it, so it’s easy to get to by subway or by foot. Lots of good photo ops, but the best views are from climbing to the top of the tower at St. Peter’s Church, one block off the plaza.

While the Marienplatz is definitely a spot for tourists, it is worth wandering down into the City Center to check it out. There are many high end shops interspersed with beer halls and restaurants. It is an easy way to spend an afternoon just poking around at all there is to see.

What train station near the Marienplatz will take me to Garmisch?
j0andphilip
Braunton, UK98 contributions
AS above answer. There are regular trains. Its worth knowing at the moment the whole of Germany, their government are giving all travellers including tourist a 7 euro ticket per person to travel by bus tram and train can purchase from Munich train station. We bought our tickets before travel from the UK and it costed us more as we didn't know.

I honestly don’t know but everything was “open” outside. They were very strict about showing proof of vaccination to gain entry to restaurants.
“Amalfi Coast /—-I’m planning on visiting the Amalfi Coast in September. We are planning on staying in Sorrento. What are the best boat tours from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi? Thanks. ”

I would first say, please don’t travel at this time! There are too many variables with this virus and the unknown. That being said:
If you travel in September 2021 (😀) you will find many local ferries available to take you to different parts of Italy. There are a lot of local trips that can booked up once you are there. TripAdvisor and Expedia have excellent prices. I highly recommend Hop On Hop off busses in each area. You can travel via train or bus rather inexpensive.
Please reconsider postponing your trip- er on the side of caution

There many alternatives for a lovely boat trip on Amalfi Coast. I would recommend a full day trip to view the whole coast. Next you can choose to have a combined boat- bus trip as well to see some lovely places which not located on the shore, such as Ravello.
I have an 8 hour layover in Munich and want to meet a friend at the city hall and grab a quick lunch before heading back to the airport to catch my connecting flight. Is there a place at the airport to store my luggage?
Qamar M
Zurich, Switzerland74 contributions
Yes, Munich Airport has "Gepäckaufbewahrung" i.e. left luggage facility. Just ask the airport staff about its exact location. You can reach the city hall (Marienplatz) by S-Bahn directly. Takes roughly a little more than an hour, so far as I remember.

What is a nice hotel to stay at that is 5min. Or less walk from Marienplatz Square. Will only be there 2 days and want to be in the heart of everything!

Hello,
I stayed at the Europaischer Hof across the Main Station, Hauptbahnhof.
Many hotels around the area. Due to the proximity of the station and the comparisons, the rates are very competetive.
This place was really nice (adults only) and a short walk to Marienplatz Square...about 7 - 10 mins walk, straight. Make a right once you exit the hotel and keep walking. Take the escalators down when you reach it and the the escalators up at the other end and then keep walking.
Keep in mind that everything is closed on Sundays.
I took advantage of the walking tours at Marienplatz and have found them to be very informative.
After the first walking tour, I realized that it I was in the heart of everything, something that you are also looking for.

Hofbrauhaus is really close by to Marienplatz a few blocks in easy walking distance. I recommend you see the beer stein locker room on the 1st floor (really neat) and the upstairs hall (historical site) at Hofbrauhaus during your visit.

I think I read somewhere that from Marienplatz the S-Bahn S-1 to the airport splits in two at Neufahm so if going to Munich airport use only the wagons toward the rear of the train. Can anyone verify that or did I misunderstand.

So sorry, I booked my transfers via internet therefore I have no clue about the trains.
What about checking the Munich trains on line?
