About
With its striking white gables, Colditz Castle is one of the most beautiful Central German architectural monuments of the 16th century. It served as an important POW-camp for high-ranking officers of the Western Allies during World War II; Winston Churchill's nephew and the nephew of the then British King George VI were also among its prisoners. Secret radio rooms, tunnels broken through the masonry and a secretly built glider are examples of the many tales told of the numerous creative escape attempts in the »Escape Museum«. The book entitled »The Colditz Story« and its film adaptation have made Colditz world famous. Today, guests from all over the world can enjoy a princely stay at the European Youth Hostel and the unique atmosphere of Colditz Castle at events and concerts, in special exhibitions and on guided tours such as »In the Footsteps of the Prisoners« featuring a prisoners' feast.

- Simon ABergen, Norway37 contributionsWell worth the effort to get thereI have wanted to visit Colditz castle for many years now but it’s location being nowhere near anything else always made it a trip that had to be made specially. Well this year we took a diversion when driving to the UK from Norway and it was worth it!! Make sure to read a book or two about the escapes before you visit and be sure to book a guided tour at least two days in advance (21 Euros each and pay in cash). They are not so great at responding to emails so just call instead to ensure your booking is taken. The tour lasted about 3 hours and was incredibly detailed, taking you into all the hidden rooms where the stories really come alive. Make sure you visit the museum there also!Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 August 2023
- Silus24Andover, United Kingdom17 contributionsWell worth the trip, great tour with SteffiIf you're a history buff Colditz castle is well worth the trip. Easy parking right near the main gate. We did the extended tour with Steffi and she was a great tour guide. Very knowledgeable with a lot of great info to give about many of the places where escapes happened. It helps if you are familiar with many of the escape attempts as it helps you visualise what must of went on. There's not a huge amount of stuff left over from the wartime. There is the glider and a number of things to see in the museum. But other than that you need to use your imagination for each of the locations but that is helped by having a great tour guide explain lots of the escape attempts at each location. You can stay on-site in the youth hostel as well which is quite an experience. The youth hostel is exactly that - it is no frills so bring your own soap and towels. But it is very clean and warm and the breakfast is good and plentiful. We made the trip to Germany specifically to see Colditz and were not let down by anything at Colditz, it's really worth the trip especially with a good guide.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 August 2023

The guide was very knowledgeable and funny. Afterwards we were left on our own to explore the museum. You get a history pad and it brings everything to life, it was amazing. We spent over 4 hours in the castle ! Definitely would visit again and I cannot recommend the guided tour enough. Worth every penny!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2024

The new Histopads are great and the tour was worth booking as you get to see places not open to the public. Thank you to your guide Steffi. This 16th century castle has had many uses, in more modern times it was made famous as a POW camp in WWII.
The castle has only recently reopened after extended renovations. The use of "histopads" was new to me and I was sceptical. Having toured the castle using the device I am a convert! You enter a room, scan the histopad on a bar code & the room comes to life showing you how the room looked in WWII. You need 2 - 3 hours to tour around.

A well presented and informative visit. Colditz has only just re-opened and now offers a self guided tour using histopads and/or a guided tour which takes you into parts of the castle with are not open to the general public, we did both and each tour complimented each other rather than repeated. Steffie did the guided tour and interpreted and presented a very fair reflection of life at Colditz during the war which is only a part of the castle's history.
To do both tours you need to allow about 4 hours, there are a lot of steps if mobility is a concern

We visited Colditz just after it had re-opened with the new interactive Histopads, and were very impressed. The rooms, which are quite minimal, come to life using the supplied devices, really immersing you in the history of the castle. Most of the content focusses on the WW2 era, but other information is also included.
Being able to see what went on there while standing in the place it happened was an incredible experience, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. We took 4 hours to go around, but we looked at and read every detail, but it was completely worth it.

This iconic castle has a lot to give. It was easy to find and get to (we did have to walk a little way but not up several steep hills as in other places), free parking and a great guide. The place is massive and there are many stories to be told about it.
Although you do not see where the prisoners were housed there are many other areas you can explore - a good half days experience,

We did a guided tour around the grounds and inside the castle. Very informative and well worth a visit. We didn’t book online , just took pot luck walking in. We only had to wait a little time before our English speaking tour started.

They start at 10:30 sharp! Make sure you have €21 per person in cash only. They are very bad at answering emails so I just called them in the end. I’m sure if you just turn up it will be fine.
Hi Dirk, is de audio tour lang. Ik bedoel langer dan een uur ?

Leipzig does have an airport but not many airlines fly there, we flew into Berlin and got the train to Leipzig as we were staying there for a few days. To get to Colditz it's a train and bus

Hello,
I want to make a day trip from Berlin to Colditz in June 2020.
What is the best way to travel there? Rail or/and bus (I won't have a car)?
I want to get there as early as possible so I can spend most of the day there.
My thanks!
John.

Hi John,
Everybody i have spoken to have either taken a coach trip or driven (we went on an arranged coach trip). It is difficult to get there (which is why it was well placed as a prison). There is a railway station nearby but i know nothing of the service.

Hi, we're looking at going on a coach trip to various points of interest in Germany. I've read Colditz Castle is high on a cliff top. Are the roads the kinds that have no barriers and steep drops? Lol

Not at all it's actually in the town of Colditz and up a bit of a hill but nothing to worry about. It's nothing like the climb to the Eagle's Nest in Bavaria if you are thinking of going there!

In the town at the foot of the castle. As building work was going on when we were there hope this helps.
