About
Handmade bookbinding using traditional silk kimono fabric is a coveted craft that results in a beautiful original functional work of art. Most book binding shops have turned into automated factories. Tsutomu, a master bookbinder, has run his authentic hand-made bookbinding studio for over 55 years ago. Every step of the process has meaning, making it an artistic and meditational experience. I'm Yoko, assistant of my father's studio. He is a great craftsman. I support him and act as an interpreter to visitors in this one of a kind experience for anyone who wants to feel real local culture. We have two kinds of workshop like " bookmaking workshop" & " Embossing workshop " both traditional & professional tools & skills use. ( The price of each class is JPY 3000 ( cash on the spot/ 6 years old 〜). The book you made or embossed book can be special souvenir for you or somebody you love. We are very welcome to have a family ( From 6 years old could be possible for kids course )

Neighbourhood: Nishijin District
A district with a long textile heritage, ancient Kyoto is still alive in the Nishijin District. Studded with its weaving factories, tea houses, and onsen, the neighborhood is charming and peaceful with a self-possessed air. Less traveled than other parts of the city, it is a district where you can take it at your own pace. Visitors can explore the many weaving and cloth houses, the free kimono shows, and the many shops selling traditional clothing and goods. Showcasing architecture with sloping roofs and wooden reliefs dating to decades past, the streets in the Nishijin District transport you back in time, making them a joy to wander.

Wonderful experience! The workshop was cute and cozy. The host first gave us the history of her family as a kimono family in Kyoto and went into how they came into bookmaking. After we were able to create a book from scratch from start to finish. This was more for beginners so a few steps were done for us (such as cutting the paper to size). There were four of us there learning how to create a book. Not only was it a lot of fun creating the book, it was fun learning about the other people there as well.

This was one of those "once in lifetime" experiences. I brought my two teenagers to Japan for the week and we found this Japanese bookmaking class. We were welcomed into their home and studio and the owner is one of two remaining bookmakers in the entire country. They patiently taught us how to create a book using rice papers, rice glue, string, punches, and then taught us calligraphy using classic techniques. They were informative, patient and truly caring. We were smiling and laughing the whole time (Note, it's harder than it looks, but they will walk you through it). We will never forget this experience or their help. Strongly recommend this. (BTW--it's right near several famous shrines including Kitano Tenmangu Shrine (For academic success--all students should visit) and the famous Golden Temple (Kinkakujuicho)--both walking distance. Highly recommend. This was not hard to find with her directions and google maps. (We took JR rail with our passess and walked about 10 minutes)
