Amazing castle but super expensive visit
Incredible castle built within the rock of the mountain ! i have never seen anything like it ! Crazy atmosphere and great stories. Good audioguide around the castle. On the négative side : an outrageous 18,50€ per person to visit the place !!!! And another 10€ for 2 hours of parking ! We did not visit the caves ( it’s usually a combined ticked) due to lack of time. It’s a true rip off, being European, that kind of price is very rare, and uncalled for. Especially while we know for a fact that the same castle ( as reviewed on trip advisor) rises their price 2€ / year.

    Unique castle:)
Unique castle, amazing visit, interesting historical facts:) Easy to get there by public transport ( shuttle cost 1€)from Postojna jama. The shuttle departs every hour to the castle and back to Postojna cave. The bus to Ljubljana departs only 3 times per day, also 4 trains from Postojna train station.

A good visit as part of the combo package with the cave
Very unique castle and quite impressive to learn of its history. Easy audio guide. Interesting walk inside visiting different parts of the castle. Beautiful view from the terrace. Best to take the combo package with the cave. Also use the cheap shuttle bus option from the cave to avoid congestion and extra cost at parking here. Can be very crowded during summer so be patient while walking inside.

    How? Why? Unreal and perfext.
Unreal!!!! How can humans build this? The castle in a cave is so strange but makes perfect sense if you lived in a time when people kill each other with spears and swords. The guided path is manageable. Food outside the cold castle was an excellent trip aa well.

    Straight out of a fairytale
We visited the Predjama castle in combination with the Postojna Cave and would definitely recommend getting the combo tickets which are especially for young people or students a great deal. We would actually suggest going to Predjama first and then visiting the caves as the caves are less crowded in the afternoon and the busses back to the central point are getting rare in the late afternoon. It was a magical experience and you get a free audio guide with your entrance ticket. The castle is stunning and the way the history has been made accessed is great. As the steps in the castle are ofen steep or even dangerous i wouldn’t suggest going with kids that are too young. Otherwise, great experience and lovely scenery.

    A good day trip
Fun and interesting adventure for a day trip when combined with Postojna Cave. Ensure you wear adequate walking shoes as there are a lot of step. The audio tour is definitely worth the extra money. Pleasant staff. Plenty of snack/refreshments/dining available

    Like a fairytale.
So beautiful it’s hard to believe this is real and not straight out of a fairy tail. Well organised route with audio guide that you tap on each number as you go round so you keep track. Well worth it

Predjama castle is a must visit attraction when in Slovenia!
Loved this castle built into a cave. Be prepared for lots of steps but when you get up there you get some amazing views. Apparently it’s about 800 years old but I enjoyed the blending of the castle construction and the cave itself. Hard to imagine how the inhabitants lived. Really worth visiting!

    Stunning Castle
Predjama Castle is a castle in Slovenia. It is near the small village of Predjama. Built in 1274 at the mouth of cave, it was extended over the next three hundred years to what is there today. The cave system the castle is built into has an entry/exit above and below the castle. The castle is visually stunning and viewing it is certainly a WOW moment - the history and displays I’m the castle are excellent and it is well worth the visit. It costs 12 Euros to enter the castle.

    Beautiful views from the castle
This is just an amazing castle …. A dream place full of adventures and surprises in side … bring comfortable shoes and with some grip this place is natural wet … there is not lifts…. The castle is full of hidden corners that takes you to a nice natural cave. You need a car or a tourist bus to reach this place . You must pay for parking per hour. The castle is in the world Guiness records of the largest castle built on a cave. They have audio Guia in many languages. People were polite and nice.

This is one impressive castle! We stopped here and just saw the castle from the outside and had a coffee at the cafe next to it. Did not have enough time to visit this castle an the nearby caves extensively, but it's well worth just the drive to see it.

We visited Slovenia in early March, so some rough weather to be expected. We arrived at Predjama Castle planning to sit and eat our packed lunch outside enjoying the view. It started to rain hard and staff were being in the umbrellas and chairs from the outside sitting area. So we deiceid to sit outside the (empty) restaurant that was under cover to eat our lunch because the car park is a fair walk from the castle. A waitress came up to us stared blankly and said 'this is a restaurant '. If you remove the outside seating then we're are peope supposed to eat their packed lunches? Not everyone can afford to eat out. Just thought it was rude and ruined the visit to the castle.

I came here from hotel Jama. I paid the entrance fee of 17.50 Euros at the hotel, it also included the shuttle. A mere 9km or 15 minute ride. A shuttle schedule is posted at the bus stop across the front entrance to the hotel, on the other side of their parking lot.

Predjama Castle is named in the Guinness Book of Records because it’s one of the best-preserved cave castles in the world.

Predjama Castle owes its name (meaning literally ‘In Front of the Cave’) to its obvious position. It stands at the entrance of a cave halfway up a 416 feet (127m) cliff and is one of the very few surviving castle caves in the Alpine foothills. It is certainly the best preserved, and as such offers us valuable information about building methods and the whys and wherefores of castle-building in the Middle Ages. Because access was difficult, it offered all the security that was necessary – which in those days was the only important thing. Its building was not dictated by comfort or luxury. Damp, cold and draughts formed part of everyday life in the castle. The small, unglazed windows let little light into the interior, but all of this was balanced out by the security offered by the cliff behind the castle and by the cave, which apart from anything else offered a secret exit to freedom. It was an impregnable medieval stronghold.

Castle Predjama was first recorded in 1274 but was probably built in the 12th century. The first origins of the castle date far back into the past. There is no doubt that some elements are from the 12th century, although a part of the castle may be even older. The castle was nearly destroyed during a massive earthquake in 1511. The castle was given its present appearance in 1583 when Count Ivan Kobenzl added the entrance tower enlarging the castle to its current dimensions. In recent centuries the castle was mainly used at warmer times of the year. Its last owners, the Windischgrätz family, used it as a hunting lodge, as can be seen from the numerous hunting trophies that still adorn the walls of its rooms today.

A walk through the castle is designed to be a walk through a medieval day. The modest gear and decorations typical of that era should help conjure up the modest way of life of an age very different from today’s. The oldest historical period left stone and bone tools behind, while the more recent periods left ceramics, jewelry, and numerous coins, now in various museums.

The entire castle is a mixture of a natural rock wall and constructed exterior ones. The rock wall is continuously moist and covered by moss and algae that give it a special color. It guaranteed the castle’s security by preventing an attack from the rear and at the same time provided clean drinking water through channels chiseled into the cave walls behind the castle.

Walk through four levels via steep and narrow stairways – because the foot traffic isn’t just one way, it can get quite congested at times. Get a view of a kitchen, two dining rooms, a heated room (the only one with wood paneling walls and ceiling instead of stone), a knight’s chamber, a chapel, an armory, a stable, a torture chamber, and more. Most of the items seen in the armory seem more like they come from a movie set (aka cheap replicas) than the real thing but I’m not an expert.
One of the owners of the castle was killed while on the 'throne' (aka toilet in this case). That story inspired Game of Thrones’ death of Lord Tywin Lannister. The author, RR Martin, visited this castle in 2011.

Costly, very crowded, audio tour works intermittently and is difficult to hear with so many people around. I was here during the slow season and I can’t imagine what it would be like in the high season. Go there to see the building, not so much its content as it is quite lacking.

I loved this castle, it’s really unique. The fact that it’s built into a cave really helped on a miserably hot summer day. Most of the castle was nice and cool, even without ac. You do a lot of walking up steps, which we don’t mind at all. My only complaint is they make you park down the hill, so you walk up a dirt and gravel road. And to make things worse, they really price gouge you to park in that crappy lot

A small, but well presented attraction well worth the detour to see.
Well interpreted and discreet staff will help and assist with any questions etc.
Great photo opportunities.
If you are pressed for time do this instead of the Postojna Cave nearby its far better experience.

We weren’t sure what to expect with this visit to a UNESCO listed cave castle but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. An audio guide was included with our admission ticket and there were clear numbers for each room so you got the information for the correct area. To further enhance this, the descriptions, whilst thorough, were short so you weren’t standing around waiting for it to finish before moving on. The way they set it out meant you almost went in a circle rather than continually doubling back. Some of the stairs were steep so it is not recommended for people with mobility issues.

I am more inclined to visit nature than churches, castles, etc. With that said, this castle was one of the highlights of our trip and I am so happy we went inside.
The audioguide shares interesting stories and facts about the castle, we really listened to every single one. It is fun to walk the whole castle.
I would definitely recommend visiting.

Along with the nearby caves, we thought this would be a good rainy day alternative. Going inside is quite worthwhile, actually, no matter what a certain expert on Europe may claim. Is it the best castle in the world? No. But going inside gives you an appreciation of how it's built into the cave. The architectural features make it unique.

Audio guide was filled with interesting facts and stories, but not too long for a child (8) to listen and pay attention. The castle is just so stunning it's easily worth the trouble of getting there!
Also, we had some nice home food with a good price in a restaurant in front of the castle. Would definitely recommend!

This is one of our favorite castles in Europe so far. We visited as a family of 5 with kids aged between 11-18. Our ticket was part of a combo ticket with the Postojna Cave. We spent €186 for entry to both and for an English audio guide at the cave. When you get to Predjama, you park in a paid lot and walk up a steep but short path to the castle. There are bathrooms and snack options leading to the castle. Once at the entry, there is a QR code to download the app which has the audio tour. There were about 27 listening stops in the tour. We LOVED the tour. It was so interesting and it was easy to imagine what it may have been like to live there. There were a lot of stairs in the tour so beware and take your ibuprofen in advance if your knees aren’t agreeable. We spent about an hour exploring. Make sure to make a wish and ring the bell!
