Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

You drive through Dannevirke, a Scandinavian settlement started in 1872, as you drive South on SH 2, from Napier to Wellington. For several decades, the town focused on sawmills and the Gallery recounts much of this history. The Gallery was established in the old Courthouse, an historically important building in town. It is an interesting collection of documents and photos, a treasure trove for a genealogist: church archives, archaeology records, family histories, letters, maps and a number of artifacts relevant to the town's history can be found.

This is an interesting small museum located in the old court house. We parked on the road outside. One room is dedicated to the Scandinavian settlers that settled in this area - it would be good for family history research. The museum was quiet when we went - the lady running it was helpful.

We called in here, to fill in a little time before continuing our journey. It is a small museum highlighting the history of the town and the area, and also the history of the predominantly Scandinavian settlers who came here. Many of the objects were familiar to us, being from the early 50's and 69's onwards. Situated in the old courthouse, opposite the police station, a worthwhile place to spend an hour or so. Entry fee of $2 only.

This small history museum is stuffed to the rafters with all the local history. The history of the big fire in October 1917 is very interesting. There is so many items in this small space you will likely miss something.
Worth a visit. It's only $2.00 to enter.

Passing through Dannesvirke we stopped and visited this site.
Housed in the old town courthouse it gives a great insight into the districts history.
Many of the early settlers were Danish and Swedish.
There is a small charge with local staff providing information about the district and town.
Very interesting.

The Gallery of History is housed in the Historical 1906 Courthouse. The Gallery offers insights to Scandinavian and local memorabilia, interesting exhibits of historical significance, and much much more. The Gallery is run by very helpful and knowledgeable volunteers and has a minimal charge to enter. Generally open during the week and some weekend days. Well worth the visit.
