- db90120 contributionsGreat way to spend a few hours.....Easy access and lots to do. There are several different sites to visit with easy, short walks to each. One gets to walk right in and among the ruins, which is different from most of the cliff dwelling sites in Northern Arizona (but also understandable). The red stone against the clear blue skies make for stunning photos. One can truly enjoy a day visiting the homes of some of our predecessors.Visited June 2023Written August 6, 2023
- JanelleGrand Rapids, Michigan151 contributionsDon't miss this visit to Pueblo ruinsSo glad we heard about this place when we were at the Ranger Station for the Sunset Crater (and glad we had time to visit!). A bit of a drive north, but worth it, to complement our visit to Montezuma's Castle and Well in the Sedona area. Such unique ruins.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2023
- Steve V58 contributionsDon't want to walk far to see history? This is the place!Wow... Thought we were lost at first, as getting there takes you well off the main highway, but so worth it. Great history, the rangers were very talkative and informative. Easy to walk through the ruins and see up-close-n-personal to what's there... Very nice and easy walk throughout.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 4, 2023
- tilney7Indiana189 contributionsNice stop on the way to Grand CanyonWe stopped here on our way to the Grand Canyon, and it ended up being a great diversion. Our young kids even enjoyed it, although they were disappointed they couldn’t climb all over the main Pueblo. Possibly the one downside is how far off the road you have to drive to get here, but it was doable for us.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 13, 2023
- Diana SNorth Branch, Minnesota140 contributionsAmazing views plus interesting local historyWe had never heard of this location, but we love history, and were not disappointed. Wupatki was a major part of an large trading network, and is made up of many pueblos on high points. Each has immense views of faraway mesas and over the lower areas. They are beautifully built of red sandstone and black basalt from the area, and have survived for hundreds of years after the people moved on. Though each pueblo looks like it sits out alone, surrounded with desert, lava flows, and the weathered cones of extinct volcanoes, the people came together for ceremonial and social events.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 1, 2023

Bring food as there is none available. The rangers are all helpful and there are plenty of restrooms at each stop. Learned so much!Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten November 18, 2023
- WIatHeartGreenleaf, Wisconsin148 contributionsHistorical stop to or from Grand CanyonThis was our main stop when traveling from Grand Canyon to Petrified Forest. We drove the loop road from Wupatki National Monument to Sunset Crater. You could get pretty close to these ruins and even walk around some of the ruins on the property before getting to the visitor center. The wind tunnel was a hit with our teens, seeing how long they could get their hats to float. You can purchase a $2 booklet that will further explain points along the way. If you have any interest in history and further background of the property, it's a good investment. Basic accommodations at the visitor center, so glad we had supplies for a picnic lunch. There were a few tables available for that use, so worked out perfectly for a mid day stop.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten March 26, 2024

All were worth the visit and it was nice to see these three together. The main thing to see at Wupatki is the 100+ room pueblo housing that is over 1,000 years old. The site has a short walk around the site, which is about 1/2 mile. There is also what is called a ball court and a kiva. Wupatki has an informative Visitor's Center and Gift Shop, as well. It is one price for both which is nice. We visited the Visitor Center and Wupatki Pueblo. The area is extremely well taken care of. The path is packed dirt and would be easy for a stroller or wheelchair. There are some steps so not all the path is accessible. Great educational experience.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten May 26, 2024

A very interesting place to visit. The loop drive brought me to many interesting places. I liked the blowhole the best if I had to choose one thing.

My wife and I loved visiting Wupatki! The pueblos are in great condition, there’s lots of information for context, and it’s easy to get around with plenty of parking. None of the hikes are overly difficult, and the trail around the main Wupatki community is paved. Great stop!!

We did this and the sunset crater. Kids are fifteen and seventeen, and I think they enjoyed it. There were no rangers around (Christmas) so they didn’t learn as much as they could have, but both sites are fascinating with good signage

It’s great to stop at the Visitor’s Center first. There are excellent interpretive displays that were redone just a couple of years ago. The information will help you learn about the area and the people who lived there at the time these structures were built, as well as the history of the National monument. The main ruins are accessed through the Visitor’s Center. There are printed trail guides for a self guided experience. There are several sites to visit in the monument but my personal favorite is Wukoki. It has not been restored but you can still walk right up to it, around it and in some of the rooms. It does not get as many visitors. The most beautiful feature is a “patio” of stone with a spectacular view of the San Francisco Peaks. It is quite magical when you are there alone in the early morning or late afternoon. When there is a breeze, I almost feel like I can hear the whispers of the ancient ones, and I am not a very mystical person.

My partner is hoping to get many pictures in the area. He is hoping to get a few pictures of some cactus’s. Are there any in this area?

Yes and no. The big cacti don’t grow above certain elevations. You will find the prickly pear cacti though. The bigger plants are found closer to Phoenix.

Is this place ever closed/ inaccessible owing to snow? We are planning to visit in December.
Arnold C
Indio, CA68 contributions
It usually snows first two weeks in December, with temps in the mid to high 30s. Brrrr. Second half of the month will see rain, snow, wind and sunshine with temps in the high 30s and low 40s. Because there is a lot of walking at Wupatki as well as Sunset Crater, if it's snowing or flurries or raining it would be tough walking. Call the Wupatki Visitor Center 928-679-2365. Closed December 25th.

Have limited time here but would like to stop. My 10 year old and I will be leaving Sedona on an April morning, stopping at Walnut Canyon to do the Island Trail, and then stopping at Wupatki before heading to the East entrance of the Grand Canyon where we will stay for 2 nights. Plan to drive past Sunset Crater without stopping as I've explored it before. Wondering if you drive from pueblo to pueblo or if you must go on foot between them. Also, since we are limited on time which ones should we focus on since we may not have time for all of them - not sure how many there are. Thanks for the advice!

We drove and stopped for quite some time at 3 oft he sites; IF you stop at the visitor center, which I think it the first stop, they will have a more detailed map and can tell you what you have time to do before you head to the Grand Canyon. I'm guessing that we spent somewhat less than 3 hours to drive and explore the 3 area that we stopped at but we did spend a lot of time at 2 of the places - then we drove on to Page that evening and had not trouble making it before suppertime. You'll both enjoy the stops that you can make.

There are a number of different pueblos within the national monument, and there are flat trails to a few of them. There is a scenic drive through the area at includes views of the Painted Desert, Sunset Crater, lava flows, The San Francisco Peaks, wildflower meadows, prairies with antelope and coyotes, and pueblos such as Wukoki- grandma could enjoy all of these things without leaving the comfort of the car.

About how much time does the average visit here take?
Marilyn M
Flagstaff, AZ83 contributions
It is good to allow at least 1 hour to walk down and around then hike back up all of those stairs. If you bring a picnic lunch then right outside is an area of picnic tables!! The visitors center itself could take up more of your time because of the neat displays and stuff to buy. Have fun!

February is snowy here and could cause closure of the place due to deep snow or could be a dry spell , never too sure here in Flagstaff what the weather will be like!!
