    Ancient Native American Dwellings
View Ancient Native American Dwellings. You could hike down and see them up close and in person or view them from above taking a very easy and short route. We opted for the latter. It was okay. We found Montezuma Castle NM to be more rewarding.

    Breathtaking
The pictures I had seen online of the canyon did NOT do it justice. It's just beautiful. The cliff side dwellings that you can walk in are something you don't want to miss. The island trail is worth the effort. I would recommend watching the movie inside first so you get a sense of the history and your surroundings.

A great to visit. If you are in the area a must see. May was the perfect time of the year. Plus there is a nice Rim tra.
While I was heading to the Grand Canyon, I saw the sign Walnut Canyon National Monument. Hiked down to the bottom to see the Cliff dwellings. The trails and the scenery was amazing. Could not have picked a better time of year to go. Had a great visitor center

    Very Unusual Historic Place
Excellent place to learn about the people that use to live in this area in unusual situations. There are many steps that lead you down to the ruins in the rocks There are railings on many of the areas. Keep young children from the edge of the ruins, sheer drop off. There is a short rim trail that follows a short section of the canyon. Many signs along the ruins and paths are very helpful. Restrooms are available at the visitor's headquarters.

Unnoticed canyon provide pleasure to old folks and kids
An excellent place for families and kids. You can walk down into the canyon as there are stairs with railings. These stairs take you into the depths of the canyon to thousands of years old homes where local people used to live. Amazing to see their skills carving out places of shelter and rooms.

YOU CAN ENJOY FROM THE RIM IF YOU PREFER NOT TO HIKE
Literally minutes from the Historic area in Flagstaff. Drive 20 minutes and you will come upon a piece of American history that is exciting and interesting. Dwellings within the walls of the canyon can be reached via a path of both stairs and dirt. While my wife and I didn't hike down we were able to enjoy the views and some very distinctive flowers. Being so close to Flagstaff, it would be a shame not to visit if you have the chance.

    Wear comfy shoes
This place is a must! Do both trails - see cliff dwellings across the canyon and walk next to them. Informational signage about the lives, culture, foods of the former populations, climate changes and vegetation.

    Just amazing
Amazing historical site. It leaves you wondering how the Hopi Natives got to their dwellings. The 700 steps down and up via the Island Trail are a little challenging, but benches are available. It was well worth the stop. It is close to I-40 and took us 1 hour. Just amazing

    Wonderful Hiking.
West Fork Oak Creek Trail. Wonderful hike with varied terrain and scenery. Check the weather and trail conditions before taking the trail. Parking fills early, and you may have to park a half mile+ from the trailhead. Water shoes are recommended.

Extraordinary little hike on the Island trail
Wonderful - so much spectacular history, on such an intimate scale, up so close you can touch it. We were there on a sunny November weekday morning. While it was cool (in the low 50s) to start, it warmed up quickly to a comfortable 62 or so, and the 700+ steps can warm you up pretty quick. I don't think I'd want to try this hike during the Arizona summer. But we had the trail entirely to ourselves until we started up the stairs again, so nothing but the sound of ravens and other bird calls echoing across the canyon of what used to be a bustling Sinagua canyon city. Wish I'd had my flute with me. It was beautiful and felt very special. And while it's a very short hike, the steps made it a workout (not for the weak of knees or lungs.) Props also to the excellent friendly park staff in the visitor center and for having a really nice little gift shop - helpful as I'd forgotten my hat.

The monument is just 3 miles off the interstate highway, it is well worth the detour. The site does entail some rather challenging stairs, first down to the canyon floor, then back up. You have a choice of trails, but don't forget your water and sunscreen. The ruins are a sight to see and worth the trek. If you aren't up to the trek, with a good camera, there are several dwellings that are visible from the visitors center. My 3rd trip.

Worth using your National Park pass and a short diversion off the highway. This national monument of ancient dwellings can be enjoyed via the accessible observation areas or by hiking closer to the dwellings. Hiking requires many stairs and more than casual hiking abilities. There’s a nice gift shop inside the entrance for info and souvenirs. Take binoculars and bottled water if you plan to hike.

Why go? Because you can see remnants of several ancient "houses," some of which you can enter, and many of which you can see "up close." The houses are on both sides of the canyon, which is an interesting feature. These are not multi-level dwellings as you might see at Chaco Canyon or Mesa Verde, but all appear to be single-level dwellings built into one of the rock strata. The visitor center is only a short drive from Flagstaff and thus easily accessible by car. The trail is either paved or well-maintained and easily walked -- as long as you can handle many stairs. As others have noted, if you walk down, you have to walk up. The "Island Trail" took about an hour for our group that included two septuagenarians who are accustomed to very little outdoor exercise.

Drove out from Flagstaff in the morning to try to avoid the heat. Mostly successful on that point! Costs $25 or a National Parks pass to enter. The island trail was around 200 steps if I remember correctly. Down wasn't too bad, but up was mandatory and a lot more challenging. Plenty of places to rest though. Be sure to take enough water! The dwellings were very interesting and the views were great. Highly recommend a visit here.

On this site you can walk several trails, the rim walk is the easiest one, the island is one more intense, first of all you have to decent 273 steps into the canyon and at a certain point you will have to go up again. Once down you can walk a trail and see cliff dwellings on the way. At a height of 7.000 feet above see level, a bit to much for us. The visitor center has a short movie to view and additional info and artifacts about the dwellers.

One our first full day in Arizona, our group went to Walnut Canyon, Wupatki and Sunset Crater National Monuments. They were all enjoyable, but I don't think any of them were worth a trip alone.

Three of the four in our party have bad knees. So when we got to the Visitor's Center, we asked about seeing the Sinagua Cliff Dwellings. A very helpful Ranger told us that we could either walk along the rim of the canyon, or we could take 38 steps to an overlook. So we ended up doing both. They were both good but when I later saw pictures taken from the trails going to the bottom of the canyon, I was sorry that we didn't make the attempt. You could see so much more of the dwellings. From the canyon rim, you had to really look to see where people once lived.

This was a perfect time to visit as the weather wasn't too hot and it wasn't very crowded. There was also a nice Gift Shop in the Visitor's Center.

I had visited a decade earlier with my wife, and this time gained admission with my Lifetime National Parks Pass to take my Daughter Nicole and her daughter Scarlett. Our time was limited so we proceeded counterclockwise around the mile long loop in about a half an hour. The many steps at altitude didn't bother me at all. The temperature was probably in the 60's with a slight breeze so the sunshine was kept at bay. The views into the canyon are spectacular. The property is maintained very well and the visitor's center has interesting information on the area. The rooms built into the walls are fascinating, and more time should have been allotted. This was the first stop today of the 7 we had planned. Next stop Flagstaff Visitor's Center...

Great short hike- paved trail with real stairs. We did the loop in about 30 min. It’s a fair amount of stairs, but there are landings to rest if needed. Beautiful views and interesting history.

This was an amazing visit. We are not able to do the walk but we're able to enjoy the view with binoculars and at the first and second viewing areas. The walk looked fabulous...it's the stairs we couldn't manage.

The canyon starts once you exit Sedona and head north. The driving is very scenic and there are some windy sections but not too difficult to drive through them. I wish I could spent more time here.
