Bit of a slog to get to the top, comparable to Mount Washington, but worth it for the views and solitude. You won’t see a ton of other people up there. When you’re done, visit Madison Hut on the way down or spend the night there!

Such a classic hike for the NH presidentials! Enjoy! I went up Airline Trail then down a loop trail. Don’t add on Madison unless you have lots of day light and strength. Tough hike but wonderful! I did with my dog, Waldo.

We followed some advise from Jake and took the Airline trail up, and the Spur/Amphibranch trail down. This was a long day hike (8 hours, including about an hour at the top and another 30 min exploring a nearby ridge). The Airline trail is steep and the last section requires climbing over a lot of rocks, but the entire section on the ridge above the tree line is really beautiful. Views from the top were also impressive. The Amphibranch route is longer, but there's fewer rocks and it's not quite as steep, plus there's a few nice waterfalls and water crossings to enjoy along the way. We passed the Crag camp on the way down and filled our water bottles here. This looked like a nice place to stay.

Overall we greatly enjoyed this hike!

Climbing this Mountain is no small task. The peek is over 4000 feet above the nearest trailhead and 5-1/2 miles each way. The journey is packed with beautiful waterways, woodland vistas and alpine splendor. Only Mount Lafayette and Mount Washington have similar views. Best if you can plan on staying at a nearby hut overnight. Either Madison hut, Crag Camp or Gray Knob will work nicely. On a clear day, you can see into Canada, Mt Mansfield, Mt Katahdin, and Portland harbor in one spot. Great view of Mount Washington, just to the south. Definitely a bucket list spot if you are physically and mentally ready!
