Neighbourhood: Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.

This is where we boarded the new tram system. On one side of the street we found the pretty gardens and a view of the castle. On the other side, some big buildings with a department store and lots of shops, hotels, lots of food. The downtown street where the New City meets the Old.

Most visitors would gravitate towards the Royal Mile due to its historical setting. Prince’s street offers a more modern equivalent, providing the same opportunities to go souvenir hunting as well as provisioning of consumer commodities.

The west end of this street is absolutely disgusting with multiple closed retail units, ‘beggars’ and filthy pavements. I was embarrassed that this is how it is today in Scotland’s capital.

Princes street is fast becoming an eyesore with tacky tourist shops and a number of closed stores being used by the homeless in tents. It is an embarrassment.

Princes Street has lovely views of the castle, but the shops have changed to mainly tourist or discount shops. Shame.

Previously, it was a lovely place to walk and go shopping, but Princess Street is now full of mostly junk shops, not worth a damn.
I'm incredibly curious what the future of this street holds and if it'll turn into a baron wasteland.

We are wanting to visit Princess Street while in Edinburgh. We will also be visiting Optical Illusion, which I believe is not far from here. Does anyone know of a car park or car parks that we could park in which is in walking distance to both these places (as we would be visiting both on the same day)?
Also, it would be a Sunday we would be visiting. Are all the shops and cafes open on Sunday, and what are their usual opening hours?
Thank you

Parking cars in Edinburgh is as difficult as collecting Scotch Mist !
Are there some Scotish brands in the street?
