The Top 10 Resort Hotels in Canada in 2019

Great design, anticipatory service, and thoughtful amenities are essential to any world-class hotel. But in Canada, the best resorts go beyond the usual offerings to immerse guests in the country’s pilgrimage-worthy landscapes — from the Rocky Mountains in the west to the rugged coastline of the east.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities.

In this year’s rivalry between Canada’s east and west coasts, the latter won big, with eight out of the 10 winning properties located in either Alberta or British Columbia. Nestled in the former’s Rocky Mountains, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise — a perennial favorite on our World’s Best lists and one of four Fairmonts ranked this year — claimed the No. 4 spot. Its rich history and lakefront location wowed many T+L readers. “The lake and scenery are pristine,” wrote one fan. “You’ll never want to leave.”

Sweeping lake views also made an impression on guests at Manoir Hovey, a charming 19th-century mansion on the shores of Lake Massawippi, in the village of North Hatley, Quebec. Surrounded by 30 acres of woodland and manicured gardens, the property has 36 rooms, most with private balconies and fireplaces, and an authentic Québécois restaurant. “There’s not much to do but eat, relax, and take in the romantic views of the lake,” wrote one respondent of the No. 6 property.

Great food (and drink) is also in store at readers’ No. 2, the Post Hotel & Spa, a family-owned Relais & Châteaux property in Alberta. The lodge has a 23,000-bottle wine cellar — one of the country’s largest — as well as one of the top fine dining restaurants in the Rockies. “The meals here are some of the best I’ve ever had,” wrote one respondent, adding, “and their wine selection is unbeatable.”

This design-forward boutique hotel may be situated at the very edge of the North Atlantic, on the largest offshore island in Newfoundland and Labrador, but its remote location hasn’t kept the well-heeled travelers away. Wrote one such respondent, “It’s a beautiful hotel in a far corner of the world, but it’s well worth the challenge to reach it.” Canada’s No.1 resort hotel for the third consecutive year, the 29-room Fogo Island Inn was designed by Newfoundland-born architect Todd Saunders, who peppers the inn with products from the area’s fishing communities and craftspeople. The clean-lined guest rooms have handcrafted quilts, wood-burning stoves, and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing guests to take in the views from their cozy suites — but you’d be remiss not to go outside and explore on your own two feet. Whatever you choose to do, the time is sure to be memorable. As one fan wrote, “It’s been two years since I visited the Fogo Island Inn, and still, the inn and the island seem to have become a part of me.”
