This Small Town in Idaho Is Known for Skiing, but It's Worth Visiting Year-Round

Sun Valley is a breath of fresh air, both literally and figuratively. It’s a place where visitors can leave their worries behind, trading in time on their computers for time with nature. It’s an all-seasons destination where every kind of outdoor enthusiast can find their slice of paradise, from skiing to golfing, hiking to fishing, and so much more. However, a trip to this small town (home to fewer than 2,000 full-time residents) does require a bit of planning.

When to Go to Sun Valley 

There’s no “bad” time to visit Sun Valley. However, there may be times that are more optimal for your interests. For example, if it’s skiing or winter activities you’re after, head to Sun Valley between December and February, when the town receives its best snow (annual snowfall averages between 160 and 180 inches, according to OnTheSnow reports). For warmth, make your way to Sun Valley from June to early September, when you can expect temperatures at least in the 70s, with average temperatures topping out at 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t sleep on its fall shoulder season though, when the foliage hits its peak between late September and late October.

Hit the slopes.

The Sun Valley ski resort is hands down one of the best in the country, spanning two mountains and offering a variety of terrains ideal for all skill levels. Experienced skiers can test their limits on black diamond runs like Inhibition, which comes with a healthy 70 percent grade. Those looking to meander can take a three-mile run that starts at the very top of Bald Mountain.

Go off-piste.

Want to get away from the crowds? Book a full-day excursion with Sun Valley Heli Ski, which includes six runs through the region's snowy backcountry. Each run typically ranges from 1,000 to 3,000 vertical feet. As heli-skiing isn't the most affordable option for most skiers, you could also consider hiring a tour company like Sawtooth Mountain Guides to get you to the more secluded slopes.

Hop on a snowmobile.

Those looking for adventure in the snow without the need for a helicopter can indulge instead on a snowmobile rental from Smiley Creek Lodge. Ride solo or take a double snowmobile through some of Idaho’s most pristine wilderness. Skate.

The Sun Valley ice rink is the place to go for a few laps around the ice or to watch the pros spin away from the sidelines. Located behind Sun Valley Lodge, the year-round facility is famous for its figure skating school and summer ice shows. Outdoor and indoor rinks mean you can get a session in whatever the weather.

Sun Valley offers 18 stunning holes at its Trail Creek Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Those looking to play halfway can visit the nine-hole White Clouds course. Here, you'll also find a driving range and chipping green.

Explore the trails.

Sun Valley has plenty of excellent trails to hike on your own. One of the most popular is the Fox Creek Trail, a challenging five-mile loop through the Sawtooth National Forest. Between the last week of June and Labor Day, you can also take advantage of the gondolas on Bald Mountain to get to some of the trailheads much faster. Cast a line.

Find a little more tranquility (and perhaps catch your dinner) out on the river with a fly fishing excursion from Silver Creek. Visitors can set off on guided half- or full-day trips, which typically take place on either the Big Wood River or Upper Lost River.

Sun Valley Inn

The Sun Valley Inn is a historic property that opened its doors in 1937. Since then, it has undergone a significant upgrade to its rooms and restaurants and offers modern amenities and a classic European-style ambience. Located in Sun Valley Village, the inn puts you within easy walking distance of restaurants, shops, and the shuttle to Bald Mountain and the rest of the resort.

The Limelight Hotel Ketchum

Just a few minutes' drive from Bald Mountain, The Limelight in Ketchum is another good option. This large hotel offers contemporary-style accommodations ranging from basic rooms to full residences. A gorgeous lobby with a fireplace gives visitors the chance to mingle after a day on the mountain, and The Lounge restaurant hosts live music on select Friday and Saturday nights.

How to Get to Sun Valley

The easiest way to get to Sun Valley is by flying into Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN). From there, it’s just a 20-minute drive to town. Travelers can find direct flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, and Salt Lake City. If you're coming from the state capital, Boise, it's an approximately three-hour drive east along major highways. The drive from Salt Lake City takes five hours, but you can stop at Craters of the Moon along the way.
