Travelpro is one of travelers' and airline employees' most trusted luggage brands, thanks to its professional-looking, durable pieces. Whether traveling by train, plane, or car, there is a massive selection of suitcase styles and sizes for any type of trip.

As Travel + Leisure editors, we pride ourselves in our extensive, expert-level luggage testing skills, so we took to our lab to try 23 pieces of bags from Travelpro. We hand-picked the brand's most popular items to try, including carry-ons, checked luggage, backpacks, weekenders, and duffels, taking them through obstacle courses to test the handles and wheels, hitting them with baseball bats and throwing them to test durability, and lifting the smaller bags into overhead bins on our airplane set to see how lightweight and easy to handle they are. In the end, 11 bags proved worthy of the T+L Trusted stamp of approval, so read further to see what our editors liked (and didn't necessarily love) about each bag.

Why We Love It
  • It maneuvers around obstacles very smoothly.

What to Consider
  • There could be more pockets for better organization.

We love how the Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-on Expandable Hardside Spinner is incredibly easy to wheel around on multiple surfaces and that the sleek hardside exterior is tough and resistant. During testing, the texture and grip of the handle made it comfortable to navigate an obstacle course to simulate an airport experience. First, we rolled it on four wheels and then two, and it was easy to roll and spin the suitcase on all four self-aligning wheels at multiple angles. While it took a little more effort to glide the bag over the carpet, we weren’t surprised by that result with 50 pounds’ worth of sandbags in the compartments.

Capacity-wise, this suitcase could fit all of the items on our packing list, but we needed to use the zipper expansion, which made the bag a little bulkier and a tighter squeeze in our overhead bin. Though we wish there were a few more pockets for organization, the interior has four zippered pockets for storing smaller items plus a USB-C and USB-A port on the top of the exterior for charging electronics while traveling. Finally, after tossing the suitcase off a shelf and hitting it several times with a baseball bat, the polycarbonate shell had no visible damage, leading us to believe that this bag will withstand use over time, making it an excellent investment for a carry-on suitcase.

The Details: Carry-on | 23 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches | 8.5 pounds | 45-liter capacity | Polycarbonate | Expandable | Smart

Why We Love It
  • It wheels over various surfaces smoothly.

What to Consider
  • A few more interior pockets would have been nice.

Travelers looking to purchase checked luggage should consider the Travelpro Platinum Elite Large Check-in Expandable Hardside Spinner, one of our top lab performers for best hardside luggage. While we’ve tested plenty of checked baggage, this suitcase stood out with its ability to roll over bumpy surfaces like the carpet and gravel in our obstacle course, and it glided across flat floors without any issues. The four self-aligning wheels are designed to spin 360 degrees, and the sturdy aluminum handle has a contoured grip allowing travelers to maneuver airports and checked luggage lines easily. With two clamshell zippered compartments and four additional zippered pockets, we found it simple to pack an abundance of clothing and accessories inside. No matter which side you lay on the ground while unpacking, travelers won’t have to worry about items spilling out of the zippered interior dividers.

Based on our durability tests, we think packed items would remain perfectly safe inside the suitcase thanks to the sturdy polycarbonate shell that only experiences slight scuffing after we tossed it onto the ground and whacked it with a baseball bat a few times.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 30 x 18 x 13.5 inches | 12.1 pounds | 108-liter capacity | Polycarbonate | Expandable | Smart

Why We Love It
  • This is the largest bag on this list, and it has plenty of designated spots for keeping items sorted and easy to find.

What to Consider
  • This is a hefty piece of checked luggage, which can make it difficult to maneuver.

The easiest way to maximize suitcase space is to pack efficiently, and the Travelpro Platinum Elite 29-inch Expandable Spinner is your best bet for longer trips. The softside suitcase has one large main compartment with a tie-down compression flap and two zippered mesh pockets to secure all of the items we packed inside. We could have easily fit two weeks worth of clothing in the suitcase thanks to the enormous interior space and the built-in suiter for preventing wrinkled clothes while traveling. In addition, a built-in toiletry bag keeps accessories tucked away in a designated spot. Although there are many pockets on the bag's interior and exterior, we thought it was just the right amount for staying organized without being excessive.

The bag is larger than the average checked suitcase, which we found made it slightly cumbersome to maneuver, but its redeeming quality is the self-aligning wheels that roll smoothly over carpet, gravel, and flat surfaces. The suitcase held up perfectly after we hit it with a bat and dropped it multiple times. With that thoughtful, sturdy design (and a TSA-approved lock), we think this checked bag is well worth the cost if you're traveling for a week or two.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 32.5 x 21 x 13.25 inches | 12 pounds | 143.5-liter capacity | Nylon | Expandable

Why We Love It
  • This bag has a built-in USB port for charging devices and a dedicated powerbank pocket for a battery.

What to Consider
  • You'll have to buy your own portable charger.

If you spot flight attendants in an airport, they are likely sporting a Travelpro carry-on suitcase nearly identical to this one we tested. While hardside suitcases are aesthetically pleasing, you'll almost always see flight crews with softside suitcases since they are generally more durable and offer more flexibility in packing space with flexible materials. These benefits were proven true during our lab tests, in which this carry-on earned top scores for capacity and bonus points for superior organizational features. It has an impressive 53-liter capacity with expandable zippers, so we had no issues fitting enough clothes, shoes, and accessories for a week, and it comes with a toiletry bag and a large packing cube for staying organized.

The suitcase also boasts a padded laptop pocket, a built-in USB port for charging devices, and a dedicated powerbank pocket for a battery (portable battery not included), which is helpful for everyone but especially for business travelers. The material didn't scuff or scratch even the slightest during our durability tests, and our only point of improvement would be to have sturdier wheels that helped distribute the weight of the bag when it's packed full so it doesn't tip forward.

The Details: Carry-on | 23 x 15.5 x 10 inches | 8 pounds | 53-liter capacity | Ballistic nylon | Expandable | Smart | 17-inch laptop pocket

Why We Love It
  • The large shape and size of the suitcase make it easy to pack it full.

What to Consider
  • It weighs over 12 pounds when empty.

T+L editors are big fans of trunk-style suitcases since it's easy to pack all types of items into the deeper compartments. While most trunks have a unique 70/30 design, this one has two compartments that are the same depth, which made packing even easier since we had much more open space to work with. Editor Taylor Fox was blown away by the spacious compartments, and she noted that all of the items on our packing list — enough clothing to last nearly two weeks — could fit on just one side of the suitcase. While some checked bags can be difficult to maneuver due to size, this one has a taller design that makes it surprisingly easy to wheel around obstacles and over rough surfaces. Made with tough polycarbonate plastic with reinforced metal corners, this bag only endured one small dent after we hit it with a bat and tossed it onto the ground multiple times. The durability and spacious capacity make this bag the perfect option for longer trips and the cream or gray colorways have stunning leather accents, so it's a bonus that it's stylish, too.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 30 x 17 x 14 inches | 12.6 pounds | 97-liter capacity | Polycarbonate

Why We Love It
  • It rolls smoothly and fits a surprising number of items.

What to Consider
  • It's not the most stylish bag we tested.

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 Rolling Underseat Carry-on is a must-have for travelers embarking on a weekend getaway when you want to pack light. Built similarly to a traditional clamshell suitcase, it’s easy to pack this bag with just a few days’ worth of clothes. The roller bag has many compartments so you can keep all of your things organized, including a removable hanging option for toiletries, an interior laptop sleeve, and three exterior pockets.

Although the bag only has two wheels, they're sturdy and sleek, rolling nicely with very little resistance. The handle is also adjustable as it expands so you can tailor it to your height. Plus, the bag is pretty lightweight, and the handle grips makes it comfortable to hold if you needed to carry it. While this isn’t the most stylish underseater out there, its functionality is hard to beat for staying organized during a short trip.

The Details: Carry-on | 17.5 x 14.5 x 8.5 inches | 5.5 pounds | 26-liter capacity | Polyester | Padded laptop pocket

Why We Love It
  • You can use the expander to add an additional two inches of space.

What to Consider
  • The handle length options are a bit awkward.

Travelpro's Maxlite Air collection features a variety of lightweight and reasonably priced suitcases, and our favorite one we tried is the Medium Check-in Spinner. While you might feel inclined to choose a larger bag over a mid-size option when shopping for a checked bag, we think opting for this one has its benefits. For example, this bag has 89 liters of space inside, and we found the capacity perfectly spacious for fitting enough clothing for nearly two weeks of travel without the expandable zippers. If you do need an extra two inches of space, it's super easy to unzip the expanders so that you can stuff more inside if you picked up a few extra souvenirs.

Associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker particularly loved the zippered flaps on each compartment for securing packed items and making it easier to open up the suitcase without worrying about items falling out from one side. Plus, we also found this bag to be extremely easy to roll around obstacles and over carpet since it's smaller and lighter in weight than a large checked bag. While we found the handle heights to be a bit awkward in height for our shorter team members, the handle felt sturdy, matching the A-plus score we gave the bag for high-quality yet lightweight materials.

The Details: Checked suitcase | 27.5 x 17.5 x 11 inches | 8.5 pounds | 89-liter capacity | Polycarbonate | Expandable

Why We Love It
  • The fabric feels durable and doesn't scratch or scuff easily.

What to Consider
  • It was a tight fit to get the bag into the overhead bin with the expanded zippers.

Made of a premium nylon fabric with leather handles, the Travelpro Platinum Elite 21-inch Expandable Carry-on Spinner held up perfectly during our durability tests, in which we dropped the suitcase several times from a shelf and hit it with a baseball bat. Softside luggage generally has more give than a hardside suitcase, making it easy to pack the main compartment full of clothing and use the expandable zippers to ensure everything fits. When expanding the zippers here to add two inches, we noticed it might make for a tighter squeeze to get the bag into an overhead bin.

We love the special features of this suitcase, including the interior with a large zippered pocket on the opening flap and a tie-down compression flap with two zippered pockets to make more room in the main compartment, if needed. Additionally, it comes with a detachable, fold-out suiter and a quart-size wet bag. The exterior has three zippered pockets and a USB port in the back for charging on the go. With plenty of stand-out features and a durable build, we think this softside suitcase has excellent value.

The Details: Carry-on | 23.5 x 14.5 x 9 inches | 8.3 pounds | 46-liter capacity | Nylon | Expandable | Smart

Why We Love It
  • There wasn't a single scratch or mark on the material after our durability tests.

What to Consider
  • The wheels didn't roll as smoothly as we hoped.

T+L luggage testing pioneer and senior editor Lydia Price has hit quite a few suitcases with a baseball, and rarely does she find a suitcase that can come out unscathed by our durability tests. This carry-on — made with polycarbonate — came out of testing completely unmarked, so we give it major props for durability and quality. The corners of the suitcase are reinforced with zinc metal to absorb impact, which was proved true when we threw the fully packed bag off of a table serval times. Besides durability, the suitcase also has a functional design with spacious clamshell compartments that could fit everything on our packing list with room to spare and without using the expandable zippers to add an extra two inches of space. We also appreciated the zippered flaps with various pockets and the included zippered pouch as an extra special touch. The suitcase was easy to wheel between obstacles, but the only minor difficulty we noticed was with the wheels that didn't roll as easily over carpet and stone.

The Details: Carry-on | 23 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches | 8.6 pounds | 45-liter capacity | Polycarbonate | Expandable

Why We Love It
  • It has a separate shoe or laundry compartment.

What to Consider
  • It doesn't have a laptop-specific pocket.

If you're looking for a versatile weekender bag, this chic Travelpro one is a great option. With a 42-liter capacity, it is smaller than a carry-on suitcase, but we packed it with a few outfits and items that you'd take on a weekend getaway and still had lots of space left over. Testing editor Jackie Cucco tried this bag in our lab, and she shared that one of the best parts of the bag is the separate compartment on the bottom that helps separate shoes and laundry or add more space in general. You can also remove it entirely to make the bag smaller and easier to lug around. Although the bag has a spacious capacity, Cucco noted that it's much more comfortable to carry than other bags she has tried, primarily due to the ample padding on the shoulder strap that you can adjust to sit comfortably on the shoulder at any length. The fabric and leather materials look premium and proved to be durable during testing, and our only gripe with the bag is that it doesn't have a laptop-specific pocket, but there are plenty of other multi-use pockets and compartments.

The Details: 18.5 x 15 x 8 inches | 3.3 pounds | 42-liter capacity | Cotton, polyester, leather

Why We Love It
  • The size is versatile enough to use the bag as an overnighter or commuter backpack.

What to Consider
  • The largest laptop it can accommodate is 15.6 inches.

Slim and compact, we love how comfortable and discrete this backpack is to wear for various occasions. With a 16-liter capacity, this is the perfect backpack for commuters to store everyday essentials like a laptop, charger, water bottle, notepads, and a light jacket. It also works well as an overnight bag for travelers embarking on a quick 24-hour excursion since the main compartment can easily hold a change of clothes and toiletry bag. Best of all, the backpack has generous padding and easily adjustable shoulder straps so we found it very comfortable to wear. The abrasion- and stain-resistant fabric has a subtle chevron pattern and elegant leather accents, and it didn't scuff or scratch during our durability tests so we appreciate that the bag offers both style and a functional design for uses beyond traveling. One thing to note is that the padded laptop pocket can fit technology up to 15.6 inches long, otherwise, the laptop will have to go in the main compartment.

Other Travelpro Luggage We Liked

We tested tons of pieces of Travelpro luggage, and while we had some clear winners, several performed well during testing but missed the mark due to minor weaknesses.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Expandable Carry-on Spinner: The bag itself is very durable and easy to maneuver, but it didn’t have any standout features compared to other Travelpro carry-ons that had noticeably helpful features.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Expandable Luggage: We were impressed with how spacious the suitcase is, but it had minor inconveniences, including a handle that is finicky to adjust and few pockets for organization.

Travelpro Roundtrip Carry-On / Medium Check-In Hardside Set: This is a great option if you're looking for a high-quality luggage set at a reasonable price, but the suitcases have minimal organizational features, so you might want to get some packing cubes to be more efficient.

Our Testing Process

We take luggage testing seriously at T+L, so we are continuously testing luggage from top-tier brands like Travelpro to update articles like this one with our most recent reviews after testing bags in our lab and out in the world traveling. While Travelpro has always been included in luggage testing from carry-ons to weekender bags, we also conducted a brand-specific test to do some side-by-side comparisons of the brand's most popular bags. In total, we've tested 23 pieces of Travelpro luggage ranging in style, size, and design.

While the exact items varied depending on the type of luggage, we tested capacity by packing the suitcases with pants, shoes, toiletry bags, and laptops to see which bags could easily fit the designated items. Once the bags were fully packed, if applicable, we placed them under seats or above into overhead compartments on our airplane set. For bags with wheels, we rolled the packed bags through obstacle courses to test for maneuverability around objects and to see how smoothly the bags rolled over bumpy surfaces like gravel and carpet.

Then, we tested durability by throwing the packed bags on the ground to see how they would hold up if they were handled roughly at an airport. Next, with carry-on and checked suitcases, we took a baseball bat to the luggage to test for high-impact durability. After being tossed or whacked, the most durable bags showed little to no damage on the inside or outside. We will also continue to test each bag for an additional six months out during our travels to see how they hold up long-term. We will continue to update this article with our findings as we test new bags.

Tips for Buying Travelpro Luggage

Decide if you want hardside or softside

Hardside suitcases are best for those traveling with fragile items, as the plastic case generally offers more protection and the exterior can be easily wiped down. Softside luggage still has ample cushioning (and more give on space for overpackers), but the fabric can be harder to clean. However, softside suitcases can hide scuffs or scratches better than hardside, and they are generally lighter in weight.

Decide if you want a luggage set

Luggage sets are convenient and cost-effective if you have the budget to spend more to get all your luggage at once. Frequent fliers or those who travel with multiple suitcases might find a set to be worth the upfront cost to get numerous bags of varying sizes.

Know your organization preferences

Whether you’re an overpacker who loves expandable luggage or prefer to travel lightly, plenty of luggage options have built-in storage for staying organized while traveling. However, if you prefer using removable storage solutions like packing or compression cubes, opt for a suitcase that doesn’t have built-in storage, or make sure it’s removable to make room for alternative storage. If you plan on traveling with a laptop, make sure your suitcase or travel bag has a pocket that will fit whatever size laptop you have. You can also look for a weekender with a designated shoe pocket like the one in our list or softside carry-ons with pockets on the exterior.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is hard or soft luggage better?

There are pros and cons to hardside and softside luggage, and at the end of the day, the choice is absolutely yours. However, a hardside suitcase is typically better than a softside bag for protecting your items since the exterior of the bag is so durable. Meanwhile, softside bags tend to be more flexible and more lightweight, which is great for overpackers. Keep in mind that when it comes to softside versus hardside luggage, there's no right answer, and shoppers should always prioritize the quality of the bag.

  • How should I clean Travelpro luggage?

If you have a hardside bag, Travelpro recommends cleaning any soiled spots with a combination of mild soap and water. You can apply the mixture to the mark with a soft cloth, gentle rubbing it until it is clean. Air dry the bag before storing it inside the soft fabric bag it came with.

To clean your softside bag, create a 50/50 mixture of water and alcohol, apply it with a soft cloth, gently rubbing the spot until it is no longer visible. Travelpro suggests adding lemon juice to the mixture to eliminate odors. Make sure the bag is air dried completely before you store it.

  • Does Travelpro offer warranties?

Travelers can buy Travelpro luggage directly from Travelpro, which will include the brand’s 100-day trial, with which any piece of luggage can be returned with free shipping.
