A Kindle is a go-to for avid readers, especially when traveling, commuting, or lounging outside. I, for one, never go on a trip without my Paperwhite, and I’ve owned three other models over the last 15 years. The newest generations are pretty durable and even waterproof. Still, being on the road can take a toll on electronics, so it's absolutely worth getting a protective case to prevent moisture exposure, scratches, and a cracked screen. Damage can easily happen at the beach, the pool, when going through airport security, or even while packing.

Finding the right case for my current Kindle took some careful research and cross-checking to make sure I got the correct size — and in full honesty, I've ordered the wrong one a couple of times and had to return it.

From leather, faux leather, and water-repellent fabric to built-in stands, straps, and automatic sleep and wake covers, there's something for everyone (and every Kindle) on the list below.

Why We Love It
  • The magnetic front flap folds multiple ways into a vertical or horizontal stand with varying viewing angles.

What to Consider
  • There might be a slight learning curve to folding the modular case.

This is the Kindle case I currently have, and I'd buy it again. The MoKo Standing Shell Cover has an origami-inspired front flap that folds in multiple ways to create a vertical or horizontal stand with different viewing angles.

I'm also fond of the magnetic cover that flips all the way back for one-handed reading and triggers the sleep and wake modes. The front flap also protects the screen, so the device can be tossed in a personal item without having to worry about damaging it. Besides that, this case has a soft, display-protecting lining and reinforced corners that absorb shock in the event of drops. It snaps on and off easily, too, unlike others I've tried in the past.

Why We Love It
  • From the maker of the Kindle itself, this perfectly fitting leather case has scratch-preventing lining and a magnetic cover for auto-standby and wake.

What to Consider
  • The cover doesn't fold back into a stand.

You can't go wrong with a Kindle case that comes directly from the Kindle brand. For one, it's guaranteed to be an exact fit. Beyond that, the cover opens and closes like a notebook to automatically wake up the eReader or put it to sleep. This helps preserve the battery life without having to power it down after each use. I also like that the front is magnetic, which not only ensures it's securely closed but also has a satisfying feel when it shuts.

Though the cover doesn't fold down to create a stand, it rotates all the way back for one-handed reading. This Kindle case is made of genuine leather, while microfiber lining helps safeguard the screen from scratches.

Why We Love It
  • The plastic is waterproof and durable with shock-absorbing corners to prevent all types of damage.

What to Consider
  • It doesn't have a screen cover, but the newest Kindle models are waterproof.

Looking for something you can bring to the beach, pool, or lake — or use while soaking in the bath? This thermoplastic Kindle case might be your best bet. The material is waterproof, so you won't have to worry about moisture seeping through as you breeze through your favorite novel.

While it doesn't have a screen cover, the newest Kindle models are waterproof. We wouldn't recommend purposefully submerging yours, but they're made to withstand being underwater for 60 minutes (or three minutes in saltwater). The case is also durable and flexible with raised corners for extra protection against bumps and drops.

Why We Love It
  • The handmade design is fully customizable with numerous leather styles, card slots, a stand, and engraving options.

What to Consider
  • This particular case is for the Signature Edition, but the brand has many other sizes, too.

If you're partial to genuine leather and willing to pay a little extra for premium quality, Noreve won't disappoint. The brand's handmade leather Kindle case has a magnetic cover that protects the screen from scratches and dust while traveling. It automatically puts your eReader to sleep and wakes it back up when unfolded.

This Kindle case is customizable, too, which could be a special touch if the case is a gift for the traveler in your life. You can opt for various leather varieties, like grained, patent, nubuck, quilted, and even vegan, and then choose whether to have it engraved. There's also an option to add card slots, a kickstand, and a hand loop on the back.

Why We Love It
  • The material is water-safe, and the magnetic front folds back for one-handed reading.

What to Consider
  • There's no stand or hand loop, and color options are somewhat limited.

I've also owned the fabric version of the Amazon-brand Kindle case. It's essentially the same as the leather option, only with a textile exterior instead. The material is "water-safe," which means water beads up on the surface and rolls off if it ever gets wet. This can give you peace of mind when reading poolside or devouring a beach read on, well…the beach.

Like the leather one, this Kindle cover doesn't have a stand or hand loop, but the cover folds all the way behind and secures with a magnet for relaxed one-handed reading. The front flap also activates the sleep and wake modes. In the end, I just wish it came in more colors.

Why We Love It
  • This case comes in a myriad of prints and patterns, from abstract and botanical to cutesy and seasonal.

What to Consider
  • Some of the brand's most popular designs tend to sell out quickly.

Plain cases are undoubtedly versatile, but if you find unadorned styles kind of boring, this one's for you. The Sparkle Case offers a wide array of designs, from on-trend checks and elegant floral motifs to landscapes and even famous artwork by the likes of Van Gogh. Don't worry; if the floral print isn't for you, there's a large collection of other patterns.

Many designs can be personalized with a name or other lettering on the front. There's even an option to order a custom case with your own photos. They're all made from genuine leather and have soft linings to protect Kindle displays from scratches, cracks, dirt, or dust.

Why We Love It
  • You can prop it up on a tray table or bar top to read while eating without straining your neck.

What to Consider
  • It's not billed as waterproof.

This Kindle protector has a built-in stand to prop it up on an airplane tray table, bar top, bistro table, or desk. I like to do this while eating (on a flight or elsewhere) because it frees up my hands and allows me to see the screen without straining my neck downward. There's also a strap for comfortable one-handed reading.

The MoKo Case has a leather-like polyurethane exterior and the microfiber interior helps prevent scratches on the screen. It's durable and easy to wipe clean as needed, but just FYI, it's not billed as waterproof.

Why We Love It
  • The Folio Case has a stretchy strap for one-handed reading, plus a kickstand for when you want both hands free.

What to Consider
  • It's not listed as waterproof or water-resistant.

SaharaCase makes some great Kindle covers as well. As the name suggests, the Hand Strap Series has a convenient strap on the back where you can slide a hand through to securely hold your eReader — an especially helpful feature for reading on airplanes or cars where there can be sudden jolts.

If you ever want both hands free, you can pull out the integrated kickstand and prop it on any flat surface. This case isn't listed as water-resistant, but the vegan leather is triple-hardened to make it durable, resistant to fading and discoloration, and easy to clean.

The Details: Paperwhite (11th gen) | Faux leather

Why We Love It
  • It's sturdy yet lightweight, and a cinch to wipe clean.

What to Consider
  • It's not waterproof, but the latest Kindles are.

Traveling can take a toll on electronics like a Kindle since it’ll likely be moved between luggage and pressed against other packed items. Made of rigid polyurethane, the Nupro Bookcover is sturdy yet lightweight with a soft feel and subtle texture reminiscent of real leather. Meanwhile, the microfiber interior helps protect the display from cracks and scratches.

Though this Kindle case isn't waterproof, the material offers some water resistance and can be wiped clean as needed. As mentioned, the latest Kindle models are waterproof. The Nupro's front cover closes securely with magnets and automatically activates the sleep and wake modes.

The Details: Kindle (2022 release) | Polyurethane, microfiber

Why We Love It
  • This affordable case is up to par with pricer options, with protective materials and a magnetic flap that triggers the sleep-standby sensor.

What to Consider
  • It's not waterproof and doesn't have an integrated stand.

Some Kindle cases cost nearly half the price of a new Kindle (sometimes more), but they definitely don't have to be expensive. With the exception of a built-in stand, this wallet-friendly one has many of the same features as higher-end options.

We're talking protective microfiber lining and a rigid exterior with a magnetic front flap that activates the sleep-wake sensor. Plus, the vegan leather exterior is water-resistant and a breeze to wipe clean if it gets dirty after a long trip. This cover comes in lots of designs, too, including simple solid hues, florals, and multi-chrome marbling. Note that it only fits the Kindle Paperwhite, so make sure you check your model before purchasing this one.

Tips for Buying a Kindle Case

Know your Kindle model

Since launching in 2007, the Kindle has gone through many iterations. Beyond numerous generations, there are always multiple new models on the market, plus refurbished old models. Since they're all slightly different sizes and thicknesses, this can make it tricky to buy a case that fits your eReader. Figure out what Kindle model and generation you have, and make sure to order the right case for it.

Not sure which one you own? The model number can typically be found directly on the back of the device next to the words "Model No." The model number will be a series of letters and numbers, which you can Google to find the name and generation, such as Paperwhite 11th Generation.

Another option is to go to your Kindle's "Settings" menu, and then click "Device Info." This should show you what model number you have.

Pick a style that fits the intended use

Like actual Kindles, there are many options for cases, and some may better suit your needs than others. For instance, if you do a lot of reading at the pool, on the beach, or in the bathtub, a water-safe (if not 100 percent waterproof) case is ideal. If you mostly read while commuting, on airplanes, or before bed, a standard leather or fabric cover may suffice.

I like to have one with an integrated stand because it allows me to set it on any flat surface and read hands-free while eating. A hand strap might also be helpful to reduce strain when reading one-handed.

Choose a durable material

If you're bringing your Kindle on a trip, a durable case is essential. The best options are usually rigid with a protective exterior material, like leather, nylon, polycarbonate, or polyurethane. Some feature shock-resistant corners, and to safeguard the display, they often have soft microfiber linings.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long do Kindle cases last?

A Kindle case can last as long as the Kindle itself. The lifespan can be five years or longer, depending on the material and whether it sustained any lasting damage. Longer-lasting eReader covers are often made of genuine leather or thermoplastic, such as polycarbonate or polyurethane.

  • Does one case fit all Kindle sizes?

Unfortunately, not all Kindle cases will fit each Kindle model. Like other tablets and smartphones, there have been many models and generations of the Kindle over the last two decades. Each is slightly different in size and thickness, so you'll need to make sure to buy a case that fits the exact model you have.

  • Do Kindles also need a screen protector?

Generally speaking, no. The newest Kindles are already waterproof, and their non-backlit displays are specifically designed to eliminate glare when reading in direct sunlight. A screen protector could affect this. Also, a Kindle case with a front flap will help protect the screen from scratches, moisture, dust, or sand.
