When First Lady Melania Trump didn't immediately move in to the White House residence following her husband's inauguration—the first First Lady in history to do so—the delay was attributed to a decision that their son Barron should finish the school year in New York City.
"She is waiting for Barron to finish school and has been busy getting the residence prepared as their new home," Stephanie Grisham said in a statement to Town & Country in 2017.
But now, Washington Post reporter Mary Jordan is alleging that the First Lady also used the move to D.C. as leverage in the renegotiation of her pre-nup with President Trump.
According to a write up about Jordan's new book, The Art of Her Deal: The Untold Story of Melania Trump, in the Post, "the incoming first lady needed time to cool off," following the campaign, which had brought to light many unsavory details of Trump's private life, from alleged affairs to his now-infamous "grab them by the pussy" comment.
Jordan also reports that Melania wanted "to amend her financial arrangement with Trump—what Melania referred to as 'taking care of Barron.'"
"She wanted proof in writing that when it came to financial opportunities and inheritance, Barron would be treated as more of an equal to Trump’s oldest three children," Jordan writes, seemingly implying that Melania thought her marriage to the President would not last.
The office of the First Lady denies Jordan's account. When reached out to by Town & Country for comment on the story, Grisham, who now serves as the First Lady's chief of staff and spokesperson responded via email:
"Yet another book about Mrs. Trump with false information and sources. This book belongs in the fiction genre. "
