New Yorkers open up about why they love their pets

New Yorkers open up about why they love their pets

From the Yorkies strutting down the streets of the Upper East Side to the beloved cats basking in the sun inside Prospect Heights apartments, the pets of New York City hold a special place in many Gothamites’ hearts. For our annual pets issue, we brought together 16 animal lovers from across the five boroughs to tell us exactly why they love their furry (and feathery, and scaly) little friends. They also shared their recommendations for everything from the best dog parks and dog friendly restaurants in the city to the best pet stores NYC has to offer. Photograph: Tayler Smith Kathy Grayson with Bertie, her chocolate PomeranianEast Village@bertiebertthepom “I had just broken up with some dude who was younger than me, and I realized I kept dating these baby men. So, I decided to get a dog and take care of that instead. I own an art gallery, so at openings he’s been surrounded by 500 people trying to pet him. We’ve been to the opera, some cool restaurants, down to Miami. Unfortunately, he’s mainly a distraction at art fairs. I don’t think he’s ever sold a painting.” Pet rec: “His favorite shop is Love Thy Beast. Did you know that there are around 1,700 parks within the five boroughs? From pocket parks to dog parks to massive beauties like Central Park and Prospect Park, NYC’s parks have their own unique characteristics, and all are cherished as jewels among the concrete landscape of the city. These parks are a must for locals and visitors alike. They offer picturesque views, fresh air, and seasonal programming and activities. Be on the lookout for movie screenings, outdoor concerts, holiday markets, hiking, and ice skating. Watson Ellis

Watson Ellis

5 out of 5 stars

This inclusive, fashion-forward West Village atelier creates impressive suits while striving to cater equally to women, men and non-binary customers. The sunny space on 8th Ave—with views of the surrounding New York skyline—welcomes all people to create the suit of their dreams. Industry veteran Melissa Watson Ellis begins the process by asking clients what they’re hoping to achieve with their custom piece, guiding them toward creative and flattering options. Eye color, hair and skin tone are all taken into account when deciding on a precise fabric. Sustainably sourcing material from mills across Italy, France and the UK, the atelier also offers one of the widest ranges of vegan options in New York.  After the brief interview, Watson Ellis takes extensive measurements and walks clients through all available options when it comes to fabric, fit, color, pockets and buttons. It’s a comfortable, welcoming space that allows clients to utilize her extensive knowledge to either sartorially experiment or execute a precisely tailored traditional piece. You may end of walking away with something you didn't realize you needed—but definitely did. Whether the suits are custom, bespoke or one-of-a-kind designs, all pieces are handmade by a single tailor. Shirts start at $300 while suits cost an average of $2,200.

The Claremont

The Claremont

5 out of 5 stars

This charming, historic resort is about the closest you can get to the platonic ideal of a coastal Maine hotel. Perched on a hill overlooking Somes Sound, the circa-1884 property is infused with authentic, lived-in character that’s been given a recent luxurious makeover to bring it into the 21st century. Comfortable chairs on the wraparound patio look out on the water and the majestic Cadillac Mountain. A hill slopes down past a heated swimming pool to a waterside restaurant and dock. Private cottages can be found dotted throughout the nearby forest. With its many nods to the surrounding landscape's beauty, any nature-loving visitor to Mount Desert Island should find exactly what they’re looking for here. The Claremont is one of the region's most iconic hotels for a reason: the accommodations strike a perfect balance between rustic and luxe. This is a resort for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural world while most likely traveling to said natural world in a BMW. It’s a mix between a classic Victorian grand dame resort and a Nancy Meyers film set. The sense of place extends beyond the 24 guest rooms in the Main Hotel to the two former summer homes of affluent families (available to rent) and the cozy cottages. During our time here, we stayed in a one-bedroom cottage a short walk from the main building. Luxury bedding and Frette linens were balanced with natural wood and a roaring fireplace. Art spoke to the outside wilderness and a private patio overlooked a for

Eastwind Oliverea Valley

Eastwind Oliverea Valley

5 out of 5 stars

A stay at Eastwind Oliverea Valley is the type of “getting out into nature” where it’s so quiet the silence almost feels loud. Even though the site is less than a 10-minute drive from busy Route 28, the resort is tucked into a beautiful forested glen that feels world’s away from the more developed parts of the Catskills. (It also has the lack of cell phone service to match.) If you’re looking to immerse yourself in a woodsy wonderland, this one’s for you. When I first checked into the property, I was directed toward the resort’s main building which houses its front desk, bar and on-site restaurant Dandelion. The staff was overflowing with personalized local recommendations and helpful tips, especially when it came to exploring the surrounding Big Indian Wilderness. Instantly, I was struck by the resort’s modern, Scandinavian sensibility which contrasts with other more rustic, camp-like lodging in the area.   That sense of sleek, natural immersion extends to the lodging options, as well. Guests can choose from 27 A-frame, freestanding cabins: Lushna Cabins, Lushna Cabins with Decks, Lushna Suites and Double Lushnas. There are also more traditional hotel rooms located in a motel-like building. We stayed in one of the charming Lushna Suites. These small cabins combine the privacy of having your own building to relax in with the communal nature (and convenient food and drink offerings) of a small resort.  When I first walked in, I was greeted by a tiny desk and closet area. Topnotch Resort

Topnotch Resort

5 out of 5 stars

Finally, a resort that lives up to its name. Topnotch Resort is a fantastic option for anyone looking for a home base in Stowe that checks multiple boxes. Located on Mountain Road between Stowe Village and Mt. Mansfield, the resort’s location means you’re close to both the world-famous runs at Stowe Resort and the charming restaurants and bars that can be found downtown. That’s assuming, of course, that guests want to leave the resort itself which boasts large and bright contemporary rooms, a popular on-site restaurant and bar, tennis courts, pools and a luxurious, 35,000-square-foot spa. The 68 guestrooms and suites are spacious and attractive with sweeping views of the mountains, large closets (perfect for storing gear) and works of art inspired by the locale’s forested surroundings. The common areas have a modern and elevated feel while the lobby restaurant and bar, The Roost, is a lively gathering space—serving food and drinks from breakfast until dinner. In addition to the guestrooms and suites, those who want to spring for some extra luxe lodgings can book one of the 16 resort homes located on the property. The expansive Topnotch Spa is a huge part of this resort’s draw. It boasts 30 treatment rooms with more than 60 different treatments and services. (Try a traditional massage and opt for a woodsy aromatherapy scent inspired by the surrounding natural landscape.) Impressively, the relaxing men’s and women’s locker rooms also boast well-appointed sitting areas as well a

Glen Falls House

Glen Falls House

4 out of 5 stars

The most enticing thing about the rustic and charming Glen Falls House, located in the heart of the northern Catskills, is what surrounds it. That’s not a knock against the hotel itself—with a historic main house dating back to 1881 that’s been thoughtfully renovated and updated. It’s just hard to compete with 47 acres of picturesque wilderness right outside your door. (Not to mention rivers, multiple breathtaking waterfalls and an inspiring mountain view.) It’s easy to take advantage of all that wilderness while staying here thanks to miles of easily accessible hiking and biking trails that connect both to the main house as well as separate cottages and hilltop motel rooms. In the summer, guests can enjoy a pool while winter visitors can book time at a forested outdoor cedar barrel sauna. Throughout the year, welcoming bonfires cast flickering flames on the forest’s edge.  It would be easy enough to offer all of those outdoor recreation options, but the food and beverage program here is, by far, one of the most creative and interesting in the area. Chef Michelle Williams has created a menu of comforting food with a strong focus on local ingredients. Risotto made with mushrooms grown on-site and the mouthwatering Kaaterskill Burger are standouts. The cocktails on hand are complex and excellent and the nightlife venue The Tavern may be the coolest in the northern Catskills with an impressive sound system and great DJs surreally located in the middle of the woods. The years of tailoring experience that can be found at Alan David Custom is evident as soon as you walk through the unassuming midtown door and enter a room full of every kind of suit you could imagine. Once you settle into a comfortable leather chair surrounded by your many sartorial options, a friendly and helpful staffer will ask you questions on preferred color, pattern and type of fabric before presenting numerous materials from the likes of Loro Piana, Zegna, Reda, Scabal and more.  After making your choices for suit fabric and lining, an on-site tailor will take over 20 precise measurements for a perfectly tailored garment. Custom suits and tuxedos start at $1,400 while overcoats start at $2,000 and dress shirts start at $220. The business promises full canvas bespoke construction, a guaranteed perfect fit and free alterations for a lifetime. Those customers interested in an additional level of tailoring can also choose to have a basted fitting for garments which adds about two-weeks of time and $100 to the suit. Alan David Horowitz, the current owner and CEO of Alan David Custom is a fourth-generation tailor—the business was originally founded by his great-grandfather who opened his first store in 1926 on the Lower East Side. All of the custom garments on offer here are hand-sewn in the New York shop as opposed to overseas production and average turnaround is 4-5 weeks with a 2-week rush program also available.

I Need That

I Need That

3 out of 5 stars

Review by Will Gleason The house in I Need That has what might be called hidden character. The curtain rises on a living room that is stuffed to the brim: Nearly every inch of Alexander Dodge’s set is covered, Hoarders-style, with objects collected over a long life. Chairs and couches are barely visible beneath boxes, books and records; broken chairs and old board games are piled on top of each other. Suddenly, as though in a garbage-dump Birth of Venus, Danny DeVito emerges fully formed from beneath a pile of blankets. A human being has been there the whole time, all but buried under all that junk.  “All of this is treasure,” Sam insists, and the value that people place on objects is at the heart of Theresa Rebeck’s slight new play. DeVito’s shut-in character is warned at the start by his daughter, Amelia—played by Devito’s real-life daughter, Lucy—that he could end up on the street unless he cleans up his place. The rest of the show, peppered with mild jokes (including a runner about the lameness of Ohio), explores whether Sam really needs the things cocooning him in his home. Rounding out the cast is his neighbor and only friend, Foster (Ray Anthony Thomas), who harbors a junk-related secret of his own. The most interesting moments of this good-natured but threadbare comedy, which Rebeck wrote during the pandemic lockdown, touch on the relationship between physical objects and memory. To Sam, each knickknack is a time machine to a meaningful moment; his inability to let go

The Callen-Lorde Community Health Awards

Callen-Lorde, the vital local organization that’s been providing accessible LGBTQ+ health care for decades, is set to mark the 23rd annual Callen-Lorde Community Health Awards this year on the Hudson River waterfront at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers. The evening, which doubles as a fundraiser for the non-profit’s ongoing community-minded efforts, will honor trailblazing baseball player Billy Bean, actress and activist Dominique Jackson and the WNBA’s New York Liberty team. The evening, which will be emceed by hilarious comedian and host Murray Hill will also feature a cocktail hour, surprise guests and captivating performances. DJ Amber Martin is set to play the after-party for those looking to stay out late. (For a good cause, of course.) You can purchase tickets here.

The William Vale

The William Vale

4 out of 5 stars

Everything about the William Vale comes back to the views. They’re spectacular and practically unavoidable no matter where you are. When you step off the elevator on any floor, you’re met by a wall of solid glass and the sprawling expanse of Brooklyn. After walking down a short hallway to your room, you can relax on a private balcony overlooking the tiny, ant-like New Yorkers below (yes, every single room in the hotel has a balcony.) Furthermore, the hotel’s current main attraction, a rooftop bar called Westlight on the 22nd floor, offers a perspective on the New York skyline so staggering that it might make you do a double take. Just in case you somehow fail to appreciate it, the bar offers complimentary bright-yellow observation viewers. Of course, in order to achieve those envious views, the sleek, modern structure was built so high that it sometimes resembles an alien ship hovering over hipster Williamsburg. But judging by the Frette linens and Le Labo products in every room, these visitors come in peace. Other perks that come with staying at the hotel are an elevated 15,000 square-foot green space (AKA Vale Park) that you can explore, a 60-foot outdoor pool (the longest in New York) and the hotel’s flagship restaurant Leuca, a Southern Italian restaurant. The hotel is perfectly located for taking advantage of the best North Brooklyn has to offer. Brooklyn Brewery is just across the street, the boutiques and restaurants of Bedford Avenue are a short walk away and McCarren

Léon 1909

Léon 1909

If you’re looking for some of the best food on Shelter Island, look no further than this excellent, unpretentious restaurant opened by Valerie and Robert Mnuchin in Summer 2022. Oriented around a centrally located, wood-burning hearth, the restaurant has the feel of the welcoming house of a close friend. You’ll want to stay and linger both on the outdoor terrace surrounded by teak tables under a natural cupola and inside the main dining room full of warm lighting, high ceilings and comfortable leather.  The food at the restaurant is inspired by the French and Italian countryside with a focus on local and regional ingredients. Don’t miss the bibb lettuce, the succulent slow fired half chicken or the perfectly cooked Bavette Steak with crispy potatoes and chermoula. The wine list nods to tradition alongside more modern natural wines and the cocktail menu is as inviting as the elevated rustic surroundings with smart creations like the Pioggia Viola with sloe gin, mastiha, lemon tonic and rosemary. Plan on spending a long and leisurely evening here to enjoy the home-made bread, fascinating cooking process in the open hearth and the peaceful, coastal surroundings.

Hotel Moraine

Hotel Moraine

4 out of 5 stars

The North Fork of Long Island beckons visitors with a handful of outsized strengths. Chief among them: gorgeous coastal views, rich farmland, relaxing wineries and quaint towns. Hotel Moraine, perched on a dramatic bluff overlooking Long Island Sound and just a short drive from the bustling town of Greenport, is well-positioned for guests to take advantage of all of these compelling local characteristics. The resort is spread out over three acres with a handful of newly-constructed, barn-like buildings perched above the expansive sound. All 20 guest rooms at the family-friendly destination feature dramatic water views. Terrace King rooms also offer private terraces while Premium King rooms contain fireplaces. The vibe throughout the property is relaxed coastal chic with a neutral color palette, white oak beams and hand-sewn rugs. Many rooms also have large soaking tubs and walk-in showers. Overall, the vibe manages to be both elevated and cheerfully welcoming. At the center of the resort is a heated patio with two gas fire pits that overlooks a large, heated saltwater gunite swimming pool. (It’s nice enough that you can be excused for never making it to the end of the lawn to visit the actual beach.) A day at the pool can involve ordering vacation-ready foods like salads and lobster rolls. Rosé is also on hand from nearby Croteaux Vineyards which shares an owner with the property. In addition to the pool, guests can take advantage of complimentary bicycles, a fitness center,

The Chequit

The Chequit

4 out of 5 stars

If you’re a historic inn that’s over 150 years old and you don’t look a day over 150 weeks, you’ve got to be doing something right. That’s certainly the case with The Chequit, a gracious throwback property located on bucolic Shelter Island. A recent renovation of the building, along with its 19 guest rooms, has brought the resort into the 21st century while retaining enough of its original charm to feel firmly grounded in the past. It’s an excellent homebase for both couples and families looking to explore the laid-back charm of the island. Surrounded by hydrangeas in bloom and fronted by a gorgeous, massive patio, the renovated building welcomes guests with a soft, off-white color palette and welcoming custom-made furniture. Adirondack chairs and woven hanging seating areas can be found on the porch and many of the guestrooms now contain some truly envy-inducing tubs. Overall, there’s an elevated and relaxed coastal vibe. Some of the tables on the patio even boast views of the nearby harbor.  There are two distinct dining rooms on the property and one café: Weakfish, The Tavern and Height Café & Wine Bar. Weakfish and The Tavern share an eclectic menu with some surprising Asian influences—Weakfish even features a sushi bar that sits eight. You may want to skip the first course and dive right into the hearty mains on the menu, but that would be a mistake. One of the best offerings is the delicious wedge salad. Meanwhile, the Heights Café serves up coffee drinks in the morning

This NYC atelier is creating a more inclusive approach to custom suiting

This NYC atelier is creating a more inclusive approach to custom suiting

The world of made-to-measure clothing is steeped in tradition. Many contemporary customs regarding suiting—from button placement and color to fabric choices—have been in place for centuries. While that continuity lends a certain timelessness to the industry it also makes it ripe for innovation. Local atelier Watson Ellis is seizing that opportunity. After working in the male-dominated business for over a decade, Melissa Watson Ellis realized there was a glaring lack of custom suit companies catering equally to women, men and nonbinary individuals. She launched her bespoke NYC atelier to reach that untapped market.“I definitely saw that the industry was missing a huge group of people,” says Watson Ellis. Photograph: Courtesy Watson EllisMelissa Watson Ellis At a light-filled atelier on the corner of 8th Avenue and 14th Street, Watson Ellis offers handmade suiting in three options: custom, bespoke and one-of-a-kind original designs. (The difference between the first two is an extra muslin fitting.) First, however, she had to overcome a pretty big obstacle: the lack of suiting templates for cis female bodies.  “There wasn’t a template,” says Watson Ellis. “So I based the middle size off of my own body and then graded up and down from there. What else did I have to work with?” Along with a personalized and inclusive approach to her work with clients, Watson Ellis prioritizes sustainability in her approach—sourcing fabrics from ethical mills across Italy, France and the U.K. The

This live music venue upstate is the hottest place to dance in the woods

On a quiet upstate road between the Catskill mountains and the Hudson River, an unassuming venue is partnering with some of the biggest names in Brooklyn music. With its dark facade and single Coors Light sign blinking in the window, it would be easy to drive past The Tavern without giving it a second glance. Those not in the know would definitely not suspect that the lowkey spot in the middle of the woods was partnering with big local names like Barbès, Sister Midnight and Good Room on a killer lineup this summer. They’d also be pretty surprised upon entering the small building to find a state-of-the-art sound system, bar and dance floor. With its main building dating back to 1881 and well-worn trails leading to stunning, under-the-radar waterfalls, the resort balances Catskills tradition with contemporary offerings like an on-site mushroom farm and Brooklinen bedding. That balancing act extends to its live music venue where cutting-edge offerings can be found within a simple roadside building. “This is the summer where everything has come together,” Glen Falls House owner Jon Picco tells Time Out. “We’re very eclectic in our taste, we just draw the line at good music.” This summer, that taste has resulted in steering away from house and EDM whi

I did a digital detox at a luxury Catskills resort—here’s what it was like

Over the last few years, the worrying threat of runaway artificial intelligence has loomed large in many of our minds. Still, it’s hard to imagine a productive way to respond to such a complicated, societal issue. For instance, though I have many issues I'd like to discuss with Elon Musk, he’s not exactly taking my calls at the moment. Thankfully, a luxury resort a few hours north of NYC is now offering an experience to address this ambient anxiety head-on. It also happens to take the form of my favorite coping mechanism: having a few cocktails and pretending something doesn’t exist. As a result, I knew I had to give it a go.  Urban Cowboy Lodge is a 26-room boutique hotel spread out across cabin-style buildings on a large hill. Outside, there are lovely views of the surrounding Oliverea Valley wilderness. Inside, you’ll find a maximalist, “mountain lodge” aesthetic with antler chandeliers, bold tribal prints and numerous pictures nodding to the region’s history. The lodge recently unveiled a new digital detox initiative called the “Unplug & Play Anti-AI package.” Upon receiving a reservation email, guests can opt into the program and trade their smartphones for a Polaroid camera and a list of screen-free activities. How hard could it be to live without a phone for a few days? Photograph: Courtesy David Krugman My husband and I arrived at the property on Friday evening. Stepping into the resort’s main lodge is like stepping into an Instagram filter you want to live in. Gian

It’s official—this is Fenway’s best Bloody Mary

There are as many opinions on how to make the perfect Bloody Mary as there are variations of the iconic cocktail. Still—whether you’re looking to nurse a hangover or just get your weekend off to an extra fun start—you deserve the absolute best version of the classic drink. That’s why Time Out Market Boston set out to find Fenway’s top Bloody Mary at its recent Bloody Mary Contest. The winner? (Drumroll, please!) Big Heart Hospitality. Eight local booze experts competed at the tasty event earlier this month for a fun day full of sipping, sampling and socializing. Guests were each given a token that they were able to use to vote for their favorite Bloody after sampling all of the available options. At the end of the day, Big Heart’s delicious and innovative take came out on top. “I think the number one thing that makes a great Bloody Mary is the consistency of the drink,” says Big Heart Hospitality’s Justin McGrail. “If it’s too thin, it tastes watery, and if it’s too thick, it’s tough to drink.” Dying to try your hand at making the winning drink yourself? McGrail was kind enough to pass along the list of ingredients he used to make the crowd-pleaser: • Tomato Juice• Horseradish• Worcestershire Sauce• Sriracha• Celery Salt• Black Pepper• Sweet Cheeks North Carolina Vinegar Sauce• Old Bay Seasoning• Sweet Cheeks Spice Rub• Sweet Cheeks Gochujang BBQ sauce• Fresh Lemon Juice “All the unique ingredients I used in my Bloody were things that we already had in house at Sweet Cheeks,”

I took the first JetBlue direct flight from JFK to Belize—here's what it was like

Traveling from Queens to a tropical paradise in under five hours? You better Belize it! JetBlue launched a brand-new direct flight from NYC to Belize City this month, and Time Out was one of first few to be able to take advantage of new “runway to reef” service.  On the morning of the inaugural flight, I could hear the joyful gate celebration taking place halfway down the terminal. At the end of the concourse, an arch with balloons had been erected, Belizean food was being handed out and a lively Garifuna musical performance was taking place to mark the auspicious first day of the new service. (JetBlue is now the only airline offering direct service from JFK to the Central American hotspot.) Photograph: Will GleasonRibbon cutting at JFK “We’re thrilled to add Belize to our growing network and offer our customers more choices to experience unique and popular destinations,” said David Jehn, JetBlue’s VP of network planning and airline partnerships, in a statement directly following the celebration. “Adding nonstop service to Belize enhances our presence in Latin America and the Caribbean and demonstrates our commitment to introducing our low fares and great service to more destinations and customers.” After taking in my first-ever pre-9am live drum performance, it was time to board the plane for the quick four-and-a-half-hour flight. Antonio Diaz, star of El Mago Pop, shares his most magical NYC spots

The celebrity illusionist Antonio Diaz, AKA “El Mago Pop,” has achieved a remarkable level of success in his native Spain. He’s not only the highest grossing European illusionist—he’s also Spain’s highest grossing performer across all art forms. Now, he’s bringing his blockbuster, mind-bending show to New York audiences for the first time with his Broadway debut at the Barrymore Theatre on August 20. “I'm living a dream, please don't wake me up,” Diaz tells Time Out New York. “Performing on Broadway was one of my childhood dreams. I never imagined what's happening these days: being the youngest illusionist to have my solo show on Broadway.” We caught up with the master magician before his show officially opens this weekend to get the lowdown on his favorite, most magical spots in NYC. (No teleportation required.) El Mago Pop opens at The Barrymore Theatre on August 20. Tannen's Magic Shop “Opened in 1925, [this] is New York City's longest running magic store. This small shop holds many tricks from some of the world's most famous magicians and is even home to some unique Houdini artifacts. The greatest magicians of the last hundred years have relied on that same company to purchase their tricks and have walked Tannen's sales floor in search of their next big idea. I love to stroll and breathe in inspiration surrounded by magic.” The High Line “The history surrounding the High Line makes me feel like I'm in a place that's more than just a park. Year in Review: The five best art exhibits we saw in 2022

In NYC, we're spoiled with blockbuster art exhibitions, a vast gallery scene and prodigious public art. When looking back over 2022, considering the hundreds of visual art shows to grace the city this year, there are five that we'll be talking about long after December 31.  It was tough to narrow down the list to just a few of the best, and there are many honorable mentions we must shout out first, including The Whitney’s “no existe un mundo poshuracán“ exploring Puerto Rican Art after Hurricane Maria, the staggeringly hyperrealistic NOTaMUSEUM pop-up and the takeover by jaguar sculptures around town, to name a few. Now, without further ado, here are Time Out New York's top five art exhibits of the year.  RECOMMENDED: Here's what coming to The Met in 2023, including a major Van Gogh exhibit Photograph: Artothek / Bridgeman Images| Gustav Klimt, Water Serpents II, 1904-07, private collection 5. “Gustav Klimt: Gold in Motion” "Goblin mode" may be the Oxford dictionary's word of the year, but in NYC, the word of the year was "immersive." It seemed like everything was immersive this year, from art to theater to holiday experiences. One immersive art exhibit stood out from the rest, though. Gustav Klimt's floral paintings practically drip down the walls at the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank, the city's oldest savings bank, which has been transformed into a center for immersive art experiences called Hall des Lumières.  The architecture of the space—massive columns and soaring

Watch the Radio City Rockettes’ intense training regimen

The Radio City Rockettes are one of the city’s most iconic symbols of the holiday season, a mind-blowingly talented group of dancers and bona fide athletes who rehearse six days a week for hours at a time. Erik Alden, managing director of Time Out Live, is neither of those things. But one thing he is? He’s game. So we sent him to the Rockettes’ rehearsal studio on the top floor of Radio City to warm up with dancers from the show and learn part of a number from this year’s Christmas Spectacular (running through January 1). Here are his big takeaways:  Bendy is beautiful “Before we started dancing, we had what they called a light stretch warm-up but what I would probably call a full workout. Their big thing is stretching their legs because so much of the movement is centered there, but there was also a big focus on the core. I’m definitely not as bendy as them. I was feeling some deep pain in areas I wasn’t even familiar with, and once we started doing planks, things got really dicey.” RECOMMENDED: Christmas in New York   Photograph: Teddy Wolff   Getting high is hard “I had no idea that the kicks were actually that high. When I heard ‘high kicks,’ I was thinking waist-high, but their feet go so high in the air they call them ‘eye-high kicks.’ I did not make it that high. I also didn’t realize that when they locked arms while kicking, they’re not actually touching each other. I couldn’t do that. I still needed to balance on them. It was actually easier to do the kicks the

The Empire State Building's newly renovated 102nd floor observatory is now open

One of the city’s most sky-high attractions is once again welcoming visitors. The (quite literal) crown jewel of the Empire State Building, the Top Deck, is now open to the public. The newly renovated 102nd floor observatory is reached via a glass elevator from the 86th floor observatory. (No, you will not be leaving with ownership of a whimsical chocolate factory.) Once you arrive at the tip-top of the iconic skyscraper, you'll be greeted with a spectacular view of the city and beyond. Like, way beyond. In fact, on a clear day, the observatory says you can see up to 80 miles into the distance. (That’s far enough to see six different states!) The panoramic view can be seen out of 24 windows spread all the way around the architecturally significant space. If it's been a while since you've been to the Empire State Building, it may be time for a return visit. After a huge renovation, the building is now home to three different floors of observatories, as well as a new museum, with everything from facts on the famous building to a giant King Kong you can pose with. (There seems to be a trend of that lately.) You can find more information on the experience here. Tickets start at $72 for adults to enter the one-of-a-kind space and $66 for children. That may seem a bit steep but if you’ve spent the last five months staring out or your apartment window at a parking lot, a change in perspective may be sorely in order.
