After all, there’s the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe, with literally thousands of shows to choose from, but there’s plenty more under the surface, too. Together with Hendrick’s Gin, we’ve curated some of the most refreshing cultural experiences to have in the Scottish capital. So grab a delicious Hendrick’s and tonic, sit back and start planning your art-filled summer.

1. Immerse yourself in a world of theatre at Edinburgh Fringe

Honestly, where do we start? For three weeks each year, the Scottish capital becomes an absolute smörgÃ¥sbord of stand-up comedy, theatre, circus, kids’ entertainment and more. The streets come alive with performers, the sun will (hopefully) shine over stunning views of Edinburgh Castle, and atmospheric bars across the city await your visit, where you can have a delicious G&T. Hendrick’s Gin is made in Scotland, after all!

To help you make sense of the enormous programme, we asked Sarah Berardi, Hendrick’s ambassador in Scotland, for a few of her top picks. She’s gone with 'Arcade' by trippy immersive theatre specialists Darkfield. This time, participants will be stationed at their own arcade machine; the show promises to use ’80s arcade aesthetics to explore human identity. She’s also gone with 'The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)' â€“ a much-loved fixture at the Fringe in which three actors will attempt to bring the Bard’s work to life in an hour, with hilarious results (particularly when Titus Andronicus becomes a cooking show). Lastly, she’s selected 'Larry Dean: Dodger– the latest show by the thrice Edinburgh Comedy Award-nominated Scottish talent. We're also a big fan of Daisy May from Haus of Dons – be sure to check her out!

2. Get musical at Edinburgh International Festival

Running alongside the Fringe is the International Festival: a curated blend of classical and contemporary music, dance, opera, theatre and more. We’re particularly excited about much-loved singer-songwriter Cat Power taking on Bob Dylan’s famous 1966 Royal Albert Hall gig song-for-song, and the world premiere of Irish playwright David Ireland’s new play, 'The Fifth Step', a darkly comic tale of a man’s journey to sobriety, starring Scottish actor Jack Lowdon.

4. Explore Edinburgh Art Fair

Once again, Edinburgh cements its status as a magnet for world-class arts and culture with the annual Edinburgh Art Fair, which attracts galleries from the UK, Europe and beyond to showcase the works of their artists. A great thing about the fair is that you’ll encounter paintings, sculpture, digital work and more by well-known artists, alongside self-taught talents. It’s anti-elitist, yet consistently high in quality. Like what you see? Artworks are for sale, so you could take home your very own unique piece, with prices ranging from £100 to £100,000.
