Fashion’s biannual moment of change is upon us, as designers (and their respective fashion houses) once again look to rejig and revitalise our wardrobes with a plethora of ideas and inspirations. In an age of information overload overriding themes can be difficult to pin down but if we had to arrive at one, we’d say it’s all about a return to fashion that is a little bit “extra”. You know the type we’re talking about, the stuff that makes you put down your flat white and divert your eyes from Instagram for a moment in order to get a closer look.
With minimalism on the back burner again, it certainly seems like colour and playful design flourishes will dominate our new-season wardrobes. How else to explain the wealth of print and bold shades around right now? In our succinct summary of some of spring/summer 2024’s most distinctive catwalk looks you’ll find a leopard-print mini suit (thanks Celine) and an intricately detailed velvet dress (Prada!). You’ll also discover a new-found appreciation for the little white dress, which is poised to become one of the season’s smash hits — goodbye for now boring LBD.
When it comes to colour, refreshing satsuma emerged as a bright new option at Fendi, while Burberry, thanks to its creative director Daniel Lee, tried its hand at exaggerated florals in shades of electric blue and yellow. Wondering about silhouettes? Trousers remain mostly long and loose with jeans sticking around as the only pair of trousers any of us ever really need (as seen at Loewe). To wear yours in a way that smacks of 2024, pair them with oversized knitwear (instead of a blazer) or try your hand at the so-called utilitarian look with a safari-green shirt and jackets with patch pockets. To quote Kelly and Ozzy Osbourne — because why not? — we’re going through changes.
