London may have miniskirts and second-hand tailoring and Paris its Breton tops and chic ballet pumps, but Miami, in fashion terms at least, has its own heat. Certainly that’s how we Brits view Florida’s most famous city, conjuring up images of undercover police in slouchy pastel tailoring and palm tree prints whenever its name is mentioned.
It was with this vision in mind that Virginie Viard set to work on designing Chanel’s spring/summer 2024 collection, which transported fans of the fashion house from Paris to South Beach, Miami (in their minds at least), with a collection that combined punchy colour with a relaxed silhouette.
She wasn’t the only designer to chase a holiday state of mind with their collections this season — destination dressing was very much a theme. We’re not talking beachwear here (though if you want to wear a Versace cocktail gown to the seashore be our guest) but rather clothes that embody escapism with their sunny colours and sense of getting away from the everyday.
For your high-summer wardrobe anything goes this year, irrespective of destination. Think pastel shades, plenty of skin on display and heels for all occasions. Sparkle is a great idea too, with embellishment that catches the sunlight a big hit.
Looking for something easier? The laid-back version of this aesthetic involves bubblegum-pink blazers and a pair of track pants — choose white if you want to fully immerse yourself in the Florida vibe. Why not feel as if you’re heading for a far-flung destination, even if you’re only off to the local Tesco?
