1 Tax demands for millions of pounds have been issued to investors in an alleged avoidance scheme that attracted dozens of celebrities. Wayne Rooney, the footballer, and Jimmy Carr, the comedian, were among 675 people who invested in two data centres in Newcastle, it was reported.

2 The maker of Pink Panther wafer biscuits has gone into administration after a sharp rise in costs because of the fall in the pound. Rivington Biscuits, based in Wigan, has made 99 of its 123 staff redundant.

3 Sir Philip Green must honour his promise to fill the BHS pension shortfall, MPs have urged. Frank Field, chairman of the Commons work and pensions committee, renewed his calls for the retail tycoon to sort out the mess six months after he told MPs he would find a solution.

4 Sky agreed to a takeover by 21st Century Fox after the American media group upped its offer from about £10 to £10.75 a share. Independent directors at Sky unanimously recommended the offer. It will allow 21st Century Fox, which owns just over 39 per cent of Sky, to gain full control of the UK broadcaster in a deal worth £11.7 billion.

5 The Lloyd’s of London insurance market could move some of its business out of the UK as a result of the vote to quit the European Union. The insurance market said it was looking at five European cities as homes for the business.

6 The online food delivery group Just Eat has announced plans to pay about £300 million to buy its closest rivals in Britain and Canada. In the UK it is buying Hungryhouse from the Berlin-based Delivery Hero for an initial sum of £200 million.

7 Policymakers at the Bank of England voted to keep interest rates at 0.25 per cent and said the rate of inflation would rise at a slower pace than expected due to the rise in the value of the pound.

8 The government is in talks with Japanese officials about taking a direct stake in a new nuclear power station in north Wales that could amount to several billions of pounds. The project to build two new reactors in Wylfa, on Anglesey, is being developed by Hitachi.

9 Alliance Trust, the finance firm, has drawn a line under 130 years of history by selling its in-house expertise to outside companies. It is selling its investment department to Liontrust Asset Management for up to £30 million and handing its £3.6 billion portfolio of global equities to Willis Towers Watson.

10 Stansted is to attempt to steal Gatwick’s crown as Britain’s second biggest airport under ambitious plans to almost double passenger numbers. The Essex airport has announced that £130 million will be spent on a new arrivals building.
