Yosemite adventure

John Edwards plans to climb Half Dome

Q Do any travel companies provide holidays to Yosemite that would enable me to climb Half Dome? John Edwards, via email

A Exodus (0845 8639600, exodus.co.uk) runs a 16-day Yosemite and the Canyonlands trip, which starts in San Francisco and ends in Las Vegas. You hike for two days in Yosemite National Park, with a chance to climb its granite dome.

It’s a tough trek along steep, winding pathways skirting waterfalls. Other famous national parks, such as the Grand Canyon, Zion and Arches, are on the itinerary and you also venture off the beaten track searching for cliff dwellings of the ancient Puebloans and the Navajo. You camp in the parks, too. The first of five departures next year is on May 29 and the trip costs £1,799pp, including flights.

Hooked on Walking (01501 740985, walkingeurope.co.uk) also operates a Colorado national parks walking holiday with an optional Half Dome trek, but with hotel stays. There are departures from May to October and the 13-night trip costs £1,392pp, without flights or transfers.
