Yemeni protesters shot dead

Yemeni security forces opened fire on anti-government protesters in the highland city of Taiz, killing two and wounding at least eight yesterday.

Armed police attempted to break up a tented protest site in the city’s Tahrir Square using teargas, batons and live ammunition.

Demonstrators have camped out on the streets in Taiz for more than six weeks demanding the resignation of President Saleh. Up to 650 activists were reportedly suffering from the effects of teargas.

Violence broke out as Mr Saleh met tribal leaders from the province calling for an end to Yemen’s two-month-old protests.

“We call on the opposition to end the demonstrations and sit-ins, blocking of roads and assassinations,” said Mr Saleh. “No concessions after today,” he added defiantly.
