Yaya Touré is expected to complete a £25 million move to Manchester City this week after Barcelona confirmed that the midfield player and Thierry Henry would be leaving the Spanish champions.
Henry, 32, who returned from the World Cup last week after France’s surprise early exit, agreed a move before heading out to South Africa after a season in which he had spent most of the time on the bench. He had one year left on his contract and has been linked with a move to the MLS in America.
Touré is close to accepting an offer from City believed to be in the region of £6.5 million a year after tax. The player’s agent, Dimitri Seluk, said: “I think we will have a solution this week. Yaya wants to play the important games and he knows that he will be an important player at Manchester City. It is not a money problem, but a problem of the lack of confidence [that Barcelona have in him]. I haven’t signed anything.”
City have lost out on Ángel Di María, the Benfica winger, who has signed for Real Madrid in a €25 million (about £20 million) deal.
