Yamataka Eye and John Zorn: Duo

As leader of Japan's experimentalists the Boredoms, Eye oscillates wildly on electronic devices while shrieking and babbling. Zorn, the saxophonist, divides jazz purists between admiration for his ability and horror at the often superficially unpalatable sounds he creates. To celebrate his 50th birthday, he took the stage of New York's Tonic club with Eye, to perform a set intermingling squawking electronics, inspirational yammering and implacably unpredictable saxophone. For the most part, Duo reminds me of the time I stood near a young offenders' centre on a deserted Icelandic moor, looking at a pool of black mud that bubbled vigorously and stank of sulphur, feeling simultaneously sickened and impressed.
