1,000 migrants reach Canaries
Canary Islands More illegal African migrants landed on Spain’s Canary Islands, taking the total in three days to more than 1,151 in nine boats. Many of the migrants now come via Senegal, where it is feared that 100,000 people are waiting to set off. Spain has made limited progress in repatriation deals. Meanwhile, boats carrying 125 migrants from North Africa entered Italian waters. Earlier, ten migrants died when a packed boat sank. (Reuters)
Congo violence
Kinshasa A soldier guarding Jean-Pierre Bemba, a leading candidate in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s presidential election, was killed in clashes with the guard of his main rival, President Kabila, last night, after provisional results showed that the two would have to enter a run-off. (AFP)

Prison break
Brussels Police were searching for 20 convicts, a day after they overpowered guards and escaped from a prison in Dendermonde, 40km (25 miles) northwest of the Belgian capital. Eight others were recaptured but most of the 200 prisoners did not flee. Those who did were mostly Eastern Europeans. (AP)
$5m drugs bust
New Delhi A Canadian has been arrested with illegal drugs worth $5 million (£2.6 million). Girdish Singh Toor was found with about 100kg (220lb) of ephedrine, hashish and other illegal drugs while he was leading a convoy of vehicles in the Indian capital. Two other Canadians were also arrested. (AFP)

Budapest At least three people were killed and about a hundred injured late last night as a violent storm sent tens of thousands of panicked people fleeing for cover during a fireworks display over the Danube to mark Hungary’s national day. There were also reports of ships colliding on the river. (AFP)
Rap star arrested
New York The rapper Busta Rhymes has been arrested and charged over an alleged assault a week ago. No details were given. Police have wanted to question Rhymes, real name Trevor Smith, since Israel Ramirez, 29, his bodyguard, was shot dead in February near a studio in Brooklyn where Rhymes was recording. (AP)
Police disciplined
Dhaka Nearly two thirds of police in Bangladesh have been disciplined in the past four years, a Home Ministry report said. More than 750 of the 117,000 officers in the force were sacked and nearly 75,000 disciplined. Allegations included immoral activities, corruption, abuse of power and inefficiency. (Reuters)
