Riot officers seal Congress

Mexico City Weeks of unrest over the results of the presidential election finally erupted into violence when police clashed with left-wing demonstrators. Riot officers sealed off Congress after using clubs and tear gas on protesters. About 15 legislators were among those hurt. The protesters claim that the election was stolen by Felipe Calderón, the conservative candidate. (Reuters)

Mugabe threat

Harare President Mugabe has said that his army is ready to “pull the trigger” on enemies of his regime. The warning came during a speech on Armed Forces Day in which he praised the army and said that it was still strong despite international embargoes. (AP)

Brisbane A Dutch teenager, 13, was buried up to his chest for more than an hour in a beach sand hole that had collapsed, killing one of his brothers, 15. Another brother, 11, escaped. The boys were on holiday near Agnes Water town in Queensland. (AP)

New York Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of New York, is to put $125 million (£66 million) of his fortune into a worldwide anti-smoking campaign. Mr Bloomberg, 64, who banned smoking in bars and restaurants, described it as a social investment. (AP)

Bangkok Five Peruvians held at Bangkok airport were X-rayed and found to have 610 packets in their stomachs, thought to contain cocaine. The group had travelled from Argentina via Malaysia. Police are expected to charge them with drug trafficking. (AP)

Berlin German prosecutors are to keep an eye on Madonna’s concert in Düsseldorf on Sunday in case the performer repeats the mock crucifixion that she staged in Rome two weeks ago, which church leaders attacked as blasphemous. (AP)

Puppies die in fire

Lowell, Massachusetts Sixty puppies that were being delivered to pet shops died when a lorry trailer caught fire. The dogs were of various breeds and aged up to 12 weeks. The driver, who alerted fire crews after spotting smoke, was unhurt. (AP)
