Gotti to turn storyteller
The self-confessed former mafioso John "Junior" Gotti said he may leave New York and try writing crime stories after prosecutors dropped attempts to seek a fifth retrial following a series of hung juries. He said it might be "better for everybody" if he left the state. Gotti served nine years in prison for racketeering, but escaped a murder conviction.
Ukraine poll
Defeat for President Viktor Yushchenko, the hero of the orange revolution, is predicted in today's Ukraine election. A run-off between Yulia Tymoshenko, the prime minister, and Viktor Yanukovych is likely on February 7.

Afghan's parliament yesterday rejected most of President Hamid Karzai's latest line-up of ministerial nominees. He is trying to form a government before an international conference in London this month. Zalmay Rasoul, the national security adviser, was appointed foreign minister.
