Beijing: Donald Tsang, Hong Kong’s new chief executive, has been sworn in at a ceremony in Beijing, the first leadership change since the former British colony returned to Chinese rule eight years ago. He replaces Tung Chee-hwa, who resigned in March. (AP)

Atlanta: Lena Driskell, a great-grandmother aged 78, shot HErman Winslow, her ex-beau, aged 85, to death in a senior citizens’ home, police said. Shie is accused of plotting the shooting because she was angry that their romance had ended.

Speeding ban

Lille: A British lawyer was arrested in France after clocking 134mph (217km/h) in his Ferrari. The man, 47, from London, paid €750 (£500) on the spot and had his licence confiscated. The limit is 130kph. He continued, with his wife at the wheel. (AFP)

Valletta: About 27 migrants travelling in a small boat off Malta have been reported missing and are feared dead, authorities said. Maltese armed forces attempted to locate the vessel after one migrant called the Italian authorities on a mobile phone to say that the boat was taking on water. Contact was then lost. (AP)

The Hague: The Dutch Cabinet passed a Bill allowing gay couples to adopt foreign children. The change in the law also abolishes a three-year probation period for gay step-parents to adopt, enabling a lesbian to adopt at once if her partner gives birth. (AP)

Vienna: Austria is to take command of the European Union’s peacekeeping troops in northern Bosnia, Günther Platter, the Austrian Defence Minister, has said. The 1,650 Austrian-led contingent will take over from a Finnish-led one in December. (AFP)
