World in Brief

Ten killed in attack near EU ‘safe’ zone

Congo: Ten people were killed in an attack by a militia force on Nyanda, a village near the troubled northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo town of Bunia, an officer of the EU force deployed there said.

He said that the ten had died from gunshot wounds. Nyanda is outside the protection zone that the French-led “Artemis” force has set up.

Ethnic massacres in the region have claimed the lives of at least 50,000 people since 1999 and displaced half a million others. (AFP)

Kathmandu: A fire destroyed a 16th-century temple on the outskirts of the Nepalese capital. The wooden Annantapur Temple was on a hilltop in Swayambhunath and was part of a Unesco world heritage site. The fire was thought to have been caused by oil lamps used for prayer. (AFP)
