Tamil Tigers die in fighting

Colombo Sri Lankan troops killed scores of Tamil Tiger rebels in fierce fighting in the northern Jaffna peninsula, the Defence Ministry said. About 28 soldiers were also killed. There was no confirmation from the Tigers, but a pro-rebel website said that there had been no casualties except for four killed on Friday. Each side is known to exaggerate the other’s casualty figures. (AFP)

Coalition ‘victory’

Podgorica The coalition led by Milo Djukanovic, Prime Minister of Montegnegro, won a majority of the votes in yesterday’s election, the first since the state proclaimed independence this year, according to polls. (AFP)

Tourists abducted

Sanaa Two German and two French tourists were abducted in southeast Yemen. Armed members of the Al Abdullah bin Daham tribe kidnapped the group in protest at the refusal of authorities to release jailed tribesmen. (AFP)

Sydney Gordon Syron, an Australian collector, lost two contemporary paintings he had bought for A$1.5 million (£600,000) when he forgot to tie them down on his car roof-rack. Both paintings were found and handed in. (AP)
