Five shot dead in house siege
Los Angeles A police officer was shot dead after a commando team was called to an incident in which a man had barricaded himself in a house after telling police that he had killed three relatives. He opened fire when police arrived. Five people, including the officer and the gunman, were killed. The six-hour stand-off took place in the San Fernando Valley. Police used teargas and a battering ram to try to gain access. (AP)

London Nine Law Lords refused to continue hearing a case brought by Equatorial Guinea against the British mercenary Simon Mann because lawyers are being refused access to him. He is said to be at the notorious Black Beach prison.
Tourist dies after ambush at camp

Kampala A gang shot a Belgian tourist several times in an attack on a mountain camp in Elgon National Park, eastern Uganda, officials said. The gunmen fled when rangers returned fire, Annick Van De Venster, 35, died a day later. (AP)
Businessman is shot dead
Moscow A prominent businessman who survived a previous assassination attempt was shot dead outside his home. His killer fled to a waiting car. Yevgeny Chivilikhin, 57, co-founded one of Moscow’s biggest retail and wholesale markets.
