Opposition strike hits Bangladesh
Dhaka: Shops and schools were closed across Bangladesh after the country’s main opposition party called a general strike to protest against a weekend grenade attack that killed 20 people and wounded more than 300. Ivy Rahman, a senior opposition leader, who lost her legs in the attack, died in Dhaka’s Combined Military Hospital, raising the death toll to 20.
Hundreds of supporters of the opposition Awami League marched through Dhaka, where more than 5,000 police were deployed. No clashes were reported, but at least 100 people were injured on the eve of the strike. (AP)

Belated burial
Johannesburg: The South African authorities will bury Paul Meintjies, a 77-year-old man who has been dead seven weeks, despite his family saying a “prophet” had promised them he would be resurrected, police said. They obtained permission from a magistrate to bury the body within 24 hours. (AFP)
