Tiger Woods, the former world No. 1 golfer, said his family situation limits the amount he can play.

Woods’s marriage to Elin Nordegren, the mother of his two children, ended last August after it was revealed that the 34-year-old had a string of extra-marital affairs.

“I have a family. I’m divorced. If you’ve been divorced with kids you’d understand,” he said.

The American, who has struggled to recapture the form that saw him claim 14 Majors before his self-imposed break from the sport, is competing in only his fourth tournament of the year at the WCG Cadillac Championships this week.

He plans to enter just one more competition, at Bay Hill later this month, before the US Masters which starts on April 7.

“I’m seeing some really good signs. Unfortunately I just haven’t been able to carry it to the golf course yet at a consistent level.

The American’s last title came at the Australian Masters in 2009 and he has since fallen from the top spot to fifth in the world rankings, his lowest position since the week before he won the U.S. Masters in 1997.

Woods, however, has since hired a new coach, Steve Foley, to work on his swing and other technical aspects of his game, as well as his much discussed problems off the tee.

He has also insisted that despite a string of poor performances, he is not frustrated or suffering from a lack of confidence and believes that his results will improve with time.

“I’ve been through it before,” he said. “I’ve been through periods in my career where I have not won and I’ve struggled before. When you’re making changes with the game and change instructors it takes a little time.

“Trust me, we have been working on it. As I said, I’ve shown signs, unfortunately it is in spurts and is not consistent. I have had to change and it takes time.”
