A women’s football match was abandoned after a fight broke out on the pitch and the police were called.

The game between Dunfermline Athletic Ladies and Armadale Thistle Ladies was halted around the 60-minute mark with Armadale Thistle winning 2-0.

An alleged assault was reported during the game, which took place at Pitreavie pitches in Dunfermline, Fife, on Sunday.

The Dunfermline Athletic team’s Twitter/X account confirmed the match had been abandoned but did not explain why.

Scottish Women’s Football (SWF) condemned the alleged violence and said it would be investigating the incident.

The two teams play in the SWF East division. Armadale Thistle are top of the league with 13 points, while Dunfermline Athletic are sitting in fifth with nine points.

Armadale Thistle won 8-1 against Dunfermline Athletic the week before in a SWF League Cup match.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Around 3.30pm on Sunday officers were called to the Queensferry Road area of Dunfermline following a report of an assault. Inquiries are ongoing.”

A spokesperson for Armadale Thistle told the Scottish Sun: “I can confirm yesterday’s match was indeed abandoned. As to the reason I can make no comment as this may hinder the police or SWF association investigation.

“The club will make a small statement later and hopefully the investigations will be completed shortly.”

A spokesperson for Scottish Women’s Football said: “SWF understands police were called to investigate alleged violent conduct at a match in the SWF League East on Sunday.

“While we cannot comment on any police investigations, SWF are clear that violence has absolutely no place in football and our own investigation into the incident will examine all accounts and the referee’s report before enacting full disciplinary proceedings.

“Scottish Women’s Football is proud of the positive role our clubs play in providing powerful role models and encouraging young women into the sport, and therefore there must be a zero-tolerance approach to any behaviours from spectators, coaches or players who tarnish that reputation women have worked so hard to foster over the last 50 years.”
