Woman’s attacker may be Scottish

POLICE investigating the rape of a woman in Berkshire think that her attacker may be from Scotland.

Thames Valley Police, who yesterday released CCTV footage of the 35-year-old woman’s alleged attacker and one of his friends, said that he was thought to be from Carnoustie.

The woman was attacked two months ago in Reading town centre by a man who spoke with a Scottish accent and told her that he was from the Angus town.

Detectives appealed to people in Carnoustie and the surrounding area to study the images. Detective Inspector Dave Hubbard said: “We believe there is someone out there who can give us the names of these two men.”

Mr Hubbard said that the offender began speaking to the victim in an English accent and then changed to a Scottish accent when he realised she was also from Scotland. “He told her he was half Scottish and from Carnoustie. The victim believes the accent was fake, but we need to establish if this man has any links with the area.”

The rape happened on May 31 when the victim, a single woman, was sitting in the street when she was approached by a man who began harassing her. Two of his friends, who have since been spoken to by police, asked the woman if she was all right and if he was bothering her. They then both walked off, unaware of what was about to happen.

The woman, who also walked away, was then followed by her attacker, who dragged her into an alleyway and raped her. She managed to fight him off and was helped by passers-by and staff from a nearby café. The attacker made off in the opposite direction and was later caught on camera trying to escape through a local nightclub.
