I can remember very vividly a holiday in Scotland, on the west coast near Portpatrick, on a private beach that only had a cottage and a house. We found this really strange cave on the beach; a giant crack in the rough, rocky cliff. The crack got narrower and narrower until only I could keep going forward (I’m the smallest in our family). We spent ages exploring and my brother even found a message in a bottle.

Phew, it’s hot and sticky in the rainforest, yet such a wonderful place to be. I followed a path through tropical trees: — bananas, mangoes, pineapples — things I’ve only ever seen in my fruit bowl. Then I heard a thundering roar. A waterfall poured over smooth rocks and crashed below, sending droplets high over the bridge. It was a brilliant experience, yet I’ve never been abroad. Where was I? In Cornwall, in the rainforest biome at the Eden Project.

The best holiday I’ve had was exploring the island of Bute. During my week there I was a king at Rothesay Castle. I served as a sailor on the Waverley paddle steamer. I was a fearless explorer, building more dens than I could count on the golden beaches, in the dark woods and by the lochs. Last but not least, I was a soldier marching with the band at Rothesay Highland Games, keeping time with the noisy bagpipes.

Have you ever flown on a plane before? I have, on my journey to Amélie- les-Bains-Palalda in the South of France. It petrified me at first, roaring menacingly on the runway, then swooped up into the sky, where clouds looked as if they were candyfloss.
The view from our villa window would be marvellous to paint. Everywhere I looked, I felt as if I was in a dream. I’d only heard of places like this in fairytales. It was all new to me but I still felt as if I belonged.

After a four-hour sweaty drive we arrived at Bacva Bay, Korcula island, in Croatia. We stumbled down the rocky hairpin track to our house, grabbed our swimsuits and made a dash for the sea. We all jumped off a small stone jetty and went snorkelling, seeing eels, starfish, crabs and sea cucumbers. We ate freshly caught fish, polenta, bread and salad in a tiny café on the deserted beach.
