Spare a thought for the style set’s forearms this winter — their latest hero item leaves them out in the cold.

Capes are 2021’s most fashionable cover-up. Yes, the sleeveless, shapeless sort.

Celine’s is made of toffee-coloured cashmere; Burberry has more than 20 styles. Dior’s came in Little Red Riding Hood scarlet on its autumn 2021 catwalk.

Lady Gaga wore Gucci’s brown catwalk cape while promoting her role in the film inspired by the brand, House of Gucci, in London. On the boulevards of Milan and Paris, street stylers have been crusading in their feather-trimmed, camel, black and gold-adorned types with miniskirts, jeans and opera gloves. The drama!

It’s not just the Insta-set. Capes are covering the shoulders of high street shoppers too. Global shopping platform Lyst reports that searches for capes have increased 45 per cent in the past month. Homegrown brand Karen Millen says capes are one of its most desired items this winter. Marks & Spencer has a £49.50 version with faux fur, among several styles.

“Capes are truly having a moment,” says Heather Gramston, head of womenswear buying at the high-end boutique Browns. “It’s a versatile wardrobe classic.”

It also may make you look like you’ve left the house in your favourite blanket. You have been warned.
