Winner of the week

Marcus Agius, chairman of the London arm of Lazard, the investment bank, was this week named as the new chairman of Barclays Bank. He will be paid £750,000 a year when he succeeds Matt Barrett, the retiring chairman of Britain’s second-largest bank, on January 1.

Mr Agius joined Barclays as a non-executive director yesterday.
