Ryan Giggs believes that the winner of tomorrow’s FA Cup quarter-final between Manchester United and Arsenal will have a mental edge in the title run-in.

Arsenal are three points behind United with a game in hand and the veteran winger said today that the match at Old Trafford could play a key role in deciding who captures the Barclays Premier League title.

“We are neck and neck in the Premier League. Whoever wins it, it can be the platform to go on and be successful this season,” the winger said.

United could certainly do with a boost after losing successive game to Liverpool and Chelsea over the past week. Another defeat would represent their worst run since 2001 and Giggs admits that the players are feeling the strain.

“It has been a week of reflection,” Giggs, who is celebrating his twentieth anniversary at the club, said. “We knew going into the two games it was going to be tough for us.

“Actually we were quite happy with our performance against Chelsea, things just didn’t go for us which can happen.

“We were more disappointed with the performance and the result at Anfield. We just didn’t turn up. We didn’t play and we didn’t deserve to win.”

Arsenal also head into the match off the back of a defeat after their 3-1 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League second round on Tuesday night.

“We both have a point to prove,” Giggs said. “Arsenal were swept aside by Barcelona but that can happen because they are such a good team.

“At times this year Arsenal have been brilliant. They have players who can hurt you. We are well aware of that.”
