TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR pursued Andy Reid for more than a year and then put the midfield player up for sale not long after he joined. Last night, Reid became the eighth player this summer to join Charlton Athletic, for a fee that could rise to £3 million, which is £1 million more than Tottenham paid for him in 2005.

Reid, who signed a four-year contract, started the first four matches of last season, but two knee injuries restricted him to only nine more league appearances, and Tottenham were at times unhappy about his varying waistline and contribution.

Liverpool are close to agreeing a fee of about £10 million with Feyenoord for Dirk Kuyt. The striker could arrive next week. Liverpool were prepared to offer Jan Kromkamp as part of the deal, but the defender, who signed in January, may return to the Netherlands to join PSV Eindhoven or Ajax. Lyons are interested in Florent Sinama Pongolle, the Liverpool forward.

Robert Green, the goalkeeper, has signed a four-year deal with West Ham United after completing a move from Norwich City for a fee that could rise to £2 million. Chelsea have offered a trial to Maximiliano Oliva, the River Plate defender. Rangers have signed Phil Bardsley, the Manchester United defender, on loan.

Birmingham City have signed Gary McSheffrey for a fee of up to £4 million. The Coventry City forward signed a four-year deal, with an option of a further two years. Chris Makin, the Reading defender, has signed a two-year deal with Southampton.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed an undisclosed fee with Blackburn Rovers for Jemal Johnson, the 21-year-old forward. Wolves are also close to signing Darren Potter, the Liverpool midfield player, on loan. Derby County have signed Mo Camara, the Celtic defender, on a three-year contract.
